2026 08 11 Developer 0001¶
π― Session Summary¶
I walked a 5-quest window (3 of 6, offset 15) of the Developer / Level 0001 β Web Fundamentals slice as a learner: three main quests (Forging the Stats Portal, Terminal Mastery, Forge Your Character) and two side quests (Avatar Forge, Badge Collector). The full level holds 26 quests; this window is one rotation and the ledger accumulates coverage across runs. Evidence was sealed by the workflow in walk-evidence.json from the agentic_validate.py execute engine (real commands, sandboxed) β I consumed it as-is and did not re-run the engine; my own contribution is the linked-journey reasoning from reading each quest source.
Headline verdict: FAIL (avg 63.5% over 4 scored quests; 0 pass Β· 2 warn Β· 3 fail). The two flagship main quests are broken as written against stock tooling: Stats Portal (45%) ships a Ruby generator with three separate, verified runtime bugs plus a {% raw %}-wrapped Liquid block that renders as literal text; Terminal Mastery (54%) fails a strict follow-along because copy/move/grep examples reference directories and files the tutorial never creates. The linchpin identity quest, Forge Your Character, errored out unscored (engine hit its 40-turn cap chasing network/git commands the sandbox denies), so it has no machine evidence. The two side quests scored in the warn band (79% / 76%) and their sandbox "failures" are largely a missing-repo-bootstrap artifact β they assume, but never state inline, that the learner is already inside a cloned, bundle install-ed IT-Journey repo that Forge Your Character was supposed to set up.
πΊοΈ The Journey¶
Walked in planner order (walk-plan.json):
- β Forging the Stats Portal: Data Analytics Quest β
45%Β· main Β· Pedagogically rich but both core artifacts (Ruby generator +pages/stats.mdblock) are broken verbatim; a beginner cannot reach a working/stats/page without debugging bugs the Troubleshooting Guide never names. - β Terminal Mastery: Conquering the Command-Line Realm β
54%Β· main Β· Strong scaffolding, but Chapter ¾ examples fail on missing dirs/files and the flagshipgrep "terminal"/whoamidemos don't show what they claim; Process Management (a stated primary objective) is one line. - β οΈβ Forge Your Character: Crafting Your Contributor Identity β
β(unscored, engine errored) Β· main Β· No machine evidence β the engine reached max-turns after the sandbox denied itsgit/curlprobes. Reasoned statically only (see Β§Evidence & Β§Chain). - β οΈ Avatar Forge: Crafting Your Digital Portrait β
79%Β· side Β· Short, sound, low-risk (GitHub avatar URL + YAML both check out); only real gap is an unstated "you must be in a bootstrapped repo" prerequisite and an unexplained fallback-test step. - β οΈ Badge Collector: Showcasing Your Achievements β
76%Β· side Β· Internally consistent (catalog β threshold pseudocode β YAML all line up), but none of its commands could be verified in isolation and Step 3 never says which URL to open.
π¬ Evidence¶
All statuses below are from commands the execute engine actually ran in the disposable sandbox (or reasoned/skipped where noted). Quotes are trimmed from walk-evidence.json.
1. Forging the Stats Portal β 45% (fail) Β· ran 7 snippets (4β 3β 1 skip), 7 reasoned; runnable 5¶
ruby scripts/generation/generate_statistics.rbβ failed. Three verified bugs, run verbatim:NoMethodError: undefined method 'iso8601' for Timeβ script requiresyaml+datebut neverrequire 'time'.@site_root = File.expand_path('../..', __FILE__)resolves one level too shallow (.../scriptsinstead of the site root), so@posts_diris missing β 0 posts, andFile.writecrashesErrno::ENOENT.YAML.safe_load($1)βPsych::DisallowedClass: Tried to load unspecified class: Timeon ordinary unquoted Jekyll dates; therescueswallows it and silently skips every post.- Engine note: "After patching all three bugs β¦ the script runs correctly and produces sensible YAML output β¦ confirming the core algorithm itself is sound, only the plumbing is broken."
pages/stats.mdLiquid block β failed. Every tag is wrapped in{% raw %}β¦{% endraw %}; rendered through theliquidgem it emitted literal{% if site.data.content_statistics %}/{{ β¦total_posts }}text. Copied verbatim as instructed, the entire Stats Portal page is inert.number_with_delimiterfilter β content-accuracy miss: it's a Rails helper, silently passed through unapplied by Liquid, so totals are never comma-formatted as implied.- passed: Chapter 1
content_statistics.ymlexample,_data/navigation.ymlexample (both parse), andupdate_statistics.shwrapper (once the generator was patched). - skipped:
docker-compose up/bundle exec jekyll serve/open β¦/stats/β no site scaffold in the sandbox (reasonably out of scope).
2. Terminal Mastery β 54% (fail) Β· ran 18 (13β 5β), 5 skip, 3 reasoned; runnable 21¶
- Chapter 3 cp/mv block β failed 3 of 7:
cp -r projects/ backup-projects/β "cannot stat projects/: No such file or directory" (Ch.2 createdprojects/a level up),mv quest-backup.md backups/β "Not a directory" (backups/never made),mv *.css styles/same. Working:cp quest-log.md,cp *.js scripts/,mv hello.js welcome.js. - Chapter 3 rm block β failed 4 of 6:
rm temp-file.txt,rm -i *.tmp,mv unwanted-file.txt ~/.trash/,ls *.log | head -5 | xargs rmall error on files never created.rm -rf old-project/silently no-ops (exit 0). - Chapter 4 grep β failed:
grep "terminal" learning-notes.txtreturns no match β the quest's own heredoc wrote only capitalized "Terminal", so the demo meant to show a successful search fails silently.grep -r "function" projects/,grep -n "error" logfile.txt, grep "\.js$" file-list.txt,grep -E β¦ logs.txtall fail on missing files. whoami(Ch.1) β failed on expectation: ran fine but printedrunner, contradicting the hard-coded "# Expected output: bamr87" (author's personal username).- passed:
pwd,ls/ls -la/ls -lah,tree/ls -R, allcdvariants (except non-existentDocuments),mkdir -pnesting,touch/heredoc,head/wc, pipelines (ls|grep,cat|wc -l,ps aux|grep node), and both early Mastery Challenges (brace-expansion treasure hunt, system.log grep). - skipped (correctly): Homebrew
curl|bash, wsl --install,sudo apt/dnfβ network/privileged/OS-specific. - completeness miss: "Process Management" is a stated Primary Objective but the whole quest teaches only
ps aux | grep nodeβ notop/htop/kill/jobs.
3. Forge Your Character β UNSCORED (engine error) Β· no machine evidence¶
verdict_obj: null;error: "claude exited 1 β¦ terminal_reason: max_turns β¦ Reached maximum number of turns (40)", withpermission_denialsongit --version/curl https://api.github.com β¦.- What this means: the engine ran out of turns probing tooling the sandbox denies; it produced no scores and ran no quest snippet to completion. I therefore report zero passed/failed commands for this quest and reason about it statically only (Β§Chain).
- Reasoned (static read of source): the quest is well-structured (Objectives with checkboxes, Mermaid map, per-step checklists, class table, XP formula, Knowledge Graph). Its steps are inherently repo- and network-bound β
git clone,cp _data/contributors/_template.yml,make contributor-stats,bundle exec jekyll serve, git push+ PR β none of which are safely runnable in an isolated sandbox, which is exactly why the engine thrashed. This is a harness/quest-shape mismatch, not a proven content bug.
4. Avatar Forge β 79% (warn) Β· ran 3 (3β), 1 skip; runnable 2¶
- passed: both
profile.avatarYAML snippets parse (YAML.load_file);mkdir -p assets/images/contributors && cp β¦ testuser.pngruns once placeholders are substituted. - skipped:
bundle exec jekyll serveβ "Could not locate Gemfile" β no scaffold; scored skipped (env gap) not failed. Engine confirms the GitHubhttps://github.com/YOUR_USERNAME.pngpattern is real and accurate. - gaps (reasoned): Step 4 never states the "cloned +
bundle install" prerequisite; the "Fallback still works" checkbox has no test procedure; no image format/size guidance.
5. Badge Collector β 76% (warn) Β· ran 2 (0β 2β), 1 skip, 2 reasoned; runnable 2¶
make contributor-stats USERNAME=β¦β failed: "make: *** No rule to make target 'contributor-stats'. Stop." (no Makefile in the bare sandbox).cat _data/contributors/YOUR_USERNAME.ymlβ failed: "No such file or directory" (no repo/data file present; no fallback guidance for first-run).- skipped:
bundle exec jekyll serveβbundlenot installed. - reasoned/passed-consistency: the threshold pseudocode block matches the Achievement Catalog exactly (every numeric badge has a matching line;
guild_foundercorrectly excluded as manual) β the YAMLbadges_pinnedexample is valid and uses catalog IDs. - gap: Step 3 never names the URL to visit (e.g.
http://localhost:4000/profile/β¦) to see the result.
Verbatim machine rollup (from
walk-evidence.md): 4 quests evaluated Β· 0 pass Β· 2 warn Β· 3 fail Β· avg 63.5% Β· ~$2.90.
π Issues Found¶
High
- H1 Β· Stats Portal Β· scripts/generation/generate_statistics.rb β observed (executed): crashes verbatim on stock Ruby via three bugs (missing require 'time'; File.expand_path('../..', __FILE__) wrong site root; YAML.safe_load rejecting native Time/Date dates β silent 0 posts). Fix: add require 'time', use File.expand_path('../../..', __FILE__), and permitted_classes: [Time, Date] (or pre-stringify dates).
- H2 Β· Stats Portal Β· pages/stats.md copy-block β observed (executed): every Liquid tag is {% raw %}-wrapped, so the pasted page renders as literal text. Fix: ship the tags unwrapped; handle the QUEST.md's own escaping separately.
- H3 Β· Terminal Mastery Β· Chapter 3 cp/mv (Step 2) β observed (executed): 3/7 commands fail β projects/ is in the wrong scope and backups//styles//backup/ are never created. Fix: add mkdir backups styles backup first and create/relocate projects/ inside terminal-practice/ (or drop that line).
- H4 Β· Terminal Mastery Β· Process Management objective β observed (reasoned from source + coverage): a stated Primary Objective taught only via ps aux | grep node. Fix: add ps, top/htop, kill, jobs/bg/fg.
- H5 Β· Badge Collector Β· Step 3 verify β observed (executed + reasoned): no URL/path given to view the pinned badges. Fix: state http://localhost:4000/profile/YOUR_USERNAME/ (or the actual profile permalink).
Medium
- M1 Β· Terminal Mastery Β· Ch.3 rm & Ch.4 grep β observed (executed): 4/6 rm and 4/6 grep examples reference files never created (temp-file.txt, *.tmp, logfile.txt, file-list.txt, logs.txt, projects/). Fix: create sample files first, or label the blocks "illustrative syntax, not meant to run."
- M2 Β· Terminal Mastery Β· Ch.4 grep "terminal" learning-notes.txt β observed (executed): returns no match; the quest's own heredoc wrote only "Terminal". Fix: align case, or use grep -i.
- M3 Β· Terminal Mastery Β· whoami expected output β observed (executed): hard-coded # Expected output: bamr87 misleads every learner. Fix: use your-username.
- M4 Β· Stats Portal Β· number_with_delimiter β observed (executed): Rails helper, silently ignored by Liquid; totals aren't formatted. Fix: drop it or add a custom Liquid filter plugin.
- M5 Β· Stats Portal Β· Troubleshooting Guide β observed (executed + reasoned): "Shows 0 posts" entry never names the real cause (Psych::DisallowedClass on Time/Date). Fix: add that entry.
- M6 Β· Avatar Forge & Badge Collector Β· unstated repo prerequisite β observed (executed): bundle exec jekyll serve / make contributor-stats / cat _data/contributors/β¦ fail out of context because the "cloned + bootstrapped IT-Journey repo" prerequisite lives only in the Knowledge-Graph footer. Fix: add an inline "Prerequisites: you're inside a cloned repo with Ruby/Bundler/Jekyll installed" note near the first command of each.
Low
- L1 Β· Terminal Mastery Β· Windows powershell fence β observed (reasoned): sudo apt update && sudo apt upgrade is WSL/bash, not PowerShell. Fix: split into two correctly tagged fences.
- L2 Β· Terminal Mastery Β· tail -f logfile.txt β observed (reasoned): file doesn't exist and -f blocks with no exit instruction. Fix: note the prerequisite file + Ctrl+C.
- L3 Β· Stats Portal Β· reading-time calc β observed (reasoned): average_words_per_post is an Integer, so Liquid divided_by: 200 floors to 0. Fix: compute as float / use ceil.
- L4 Β· Avatar Forge & Badge Collector Β· side_quest permalink shape β observed (reasoned, from frontmatter): both are quest_type: side_quest but canonical permalink is /quests/0001/avatar-forge/ (no /side-quests/ segment) with the /side-quests/β¦ path as redirect_from. The validator regex accepts the short form, but Β§3's mapping table maps side_quest β /quests/XXXX/side-quests/<slug>/; worth confirming this migration was intentional and consistent.
- L5 Β· Forge Your Character Β· "What's Next" links use redirect paths β observed (reasoned): it links to /quests/0001/side-quests/avatar-forge/ and β¦/badge-collector/, i.e. the redirect_from (old) URLs, not the canonical /quests/0001/avatar-forge/. Works via redirect but should point at canonical.
No blocking issue was invented β every High/Medium above is backed by a command the engine actually ran, except H4/M5 which are marked reasoned. The two warn-band side quests have no blocking defect, only the M6/L4/L5 polish items.
π Chain Continuity¶
Two series share this window β coherence is partial. The planner's window (offset 15) mixes two distinct quest-series that co-live at level 0001:
- Forging the Stats Portal β quest_series: Jekyll Site Building β a standalone main quest (required/recommended/unlocks all empty). It's an outlier in this slice: nothing in the window feeds it and it feeds nothing here.
- Terminal Mastery β Foundation Path: Digital Literacy Mastery β foundational CLI, and a recommended prerequisite of Forge Your Character.
- Forge Your Character / Avatar Forge / Badge Collector β Contributor Path: Identity & Recognition β a tight sub-chain: forge-your-character (unlocks: avatar-forge, badge-collector), and both side quests declare required_quests: [/quests/0001/forge-your-character/].
The linchpin is unscored, and that ripples. Forge Your Character is the quest that actually creates _data/contributors/YOUR_USERNAME.yml and runs the stats generator. It's the one the engine couldn't score (max-turns). Because the execute engine scores each quest in isolation, it walked Avatar Forge and Badge Collector with no prior state β so their sandbox failures (cat _data/contributors/β¦ No such file, make contributor-stats no rule) are downstream of the missing bootstrap, not independent defects. As a learner walking the chain in order and properly β clone the repo, create the data file, run the generator in Forge Your Character β those exact commands would succeed. The real, learner-visible gap is that neither side quest restates the bootstrap prerequisite inline (M6): a learner who lands on Badge Collector directly hits the same wall the sandbox did.
Prerequisite satisfaction within the slice: Terminal Mastery β Forge Your Character is a clean, satisfied hand-off (CLI comfort is exactly what Step 1's git clone/cd assume). Forge Your Character β Avatar Forge/Badge Collector is correctly declared and, if completed, satisfied. Stats Portal sits outside the identity chain entirely and could be walked in any order.
Ordering observation: the planner's order (Stats Portal β Terminal Mastery β Forge β Avatar β Badge) front-loads the standalone Stats Portal and places Terminal Mastery after it, whereas a real beginner's natural path is Terminal Mastery β Forge Your Character β Avatar/Badge, with Stats Portal as an independent side-track. Not a blocking break (no unmet in-slice prerequisite is violated), just a mild incoherence from windowing two series together.
π§ Reasoning & Method¶
- Mode:
execute. Evidence was pre-computed and sealed by the workflow intowalk-evidence.json/walk-evidence.md(the engine's childclaudeprocesses can't authenticate from an agent Bash tool). I consumed it verbatim β I did not re-run, edit, regenerate, or hand-write any evidence, and I did not modifywalk-plan.json. My independent work was reading all five quest sources in plan order and reasoning about the linked journey. - What I ran vs. reasoned: every
passed/failedin Β§Evidence comes from a command the sealed engine actually executed in the disposable sandbox. Items I could only judge from source (Process-Management coverage, thepowershellfence, permalink shapes, cross-link targets, and everything about Forge Your Character) are labeled reasoned. - Coverage limits (stated honestly):
- 1 of 5 quests (Forge Your Character) has NO machine evidence β the engine errored at max-turns. Its line in Β§Journey is unscored and I reasoned about it statically only. It is the pivotal quest of the identity chain, so this is the single biggest gap in this session's coverage.
- This was a window (3/6, size 5) of a 26-quest level β ~19% of the level; the ledger accumulates the rest across future rotations.
- The sandbox is network- and privilege-restricted and has no Jekyll/Bundler site scaffold, so every
bundle exec jekyll serve,docker-compose up,make β¦,curl|bash, sudo, andgit pushstep was skipped or denied. Those skips are correct sandbox discipline, but they mean the rendered outcomes (does/stats/display? does the character sheet render? do pinned badges show?) were not visually verified end-to-end β only the underlying scripts/YAML/Liquid were. - Confidence: High for the two main-quest FAILs (each backed by multiple reproduced command failures with root causes the engine confirmed by patching). Medium for the two side-quest WARNs (their core content is sound; the failures are environmental and the gaps are documentation-level). Low/none for Forge Your Character β no evidence, reasoned only.
- Scope: one slice, one report. I did not branch, commit, push, edit any quest, or expand to other levels/characters. Fixable bugs are captured in Β§Issues for a content pass to act on.
