2026 08 10 Developer 0001

🎯 Session Summary

I walked a 5-quest window (window 2 of 6, quests 11–15 of 26) of the Developer path at Level 0001 β€” Web Fundamentals (🌱 Apprentice) as a beginner would, driving the sealed agentic execute engine over each quest in a disposable sandbox and then re-reading each quest source in plan order as a linked journey.

Headline verdict: fail. Of the 5 quests, 0 passed, 1 warned, 4 failed (avg 50.0%). Two quests (it-journey-stack-analysis, self-operating-website-01-the-summoning) never produced a score β€” the engine hit its 40-turn ceiling after the sandbox denied the network calls those quests depend on, so they are recorded as errored / no verdict, not as tested failures. Of the three quests that were scored, one is genuinely close to solid (seo-optimization, 75% warn β€” its core technical claims all reproduced when actually built and served), one has real reproducible blockers in its Jekyll chapter (github-pages-portal, 56%), and one is not a functioning quest at all (personal-site, 19% β€” a personal bookmarks table with placeholder objectives). A maintainer should prioritize the personal-site rewrite and the three github-pages-portal Jekyll blockers, both of which are on the main learning spine of this level.

πŸ—ΊοΈ The Journey

# Verdict Quest (type) Score One-line takeaway
1 ❌ The GitHub Pages Portal: Forging Your Digital Realm (main) 56 Git/HTML/YAML content verified working; Jekyll chapter has 2 reproducible blockers + a silent publish bug.
2 ⚠️ Stack Attack Analysis: IT-Journey (side) β€” No verdict β€” engine hit max_turns after network denials; only static reasoning available.
3 ❌ Build a Personal Website with GitHub Pages (side) 19 Not a tutorial β€” a personal bookmarks table with auto-seeded placeholder objectives.
4 ⚠️ The Summoning: Raise the Site and Give It a Voice (main) β€” No verdict β€” engine hit max_turns after network/OAuth-dependent steps were denied; static reasoning only.
5 ⚠️ SEO Optimization: Meta Tags, Sitemaps & Structured Data (main) 75 Core SEO claims reproduced when built & served; one build-crash bug (jekyll-feed enabled but never installed).

(Emoji reflect the walker's roll-up: ❌ = scored fail, ⚠️ = warn or no-verdict/needs-attention. The engine's own counts are 0 pass / 1 warn / 4 fail because it charts every non-pass, including the two errored quests, as fail.)

πŸ”¬ Evidence

All commands below were actually run by the sealed execute engine (--mode execute, walk-evidence.json); items marked reasoned were judged statically by the engine (not run); items I judged from the quest source without a command are labeled reasoned (walker).

1. github-pages-portal β€” 56% ❌ (ran 14/11 runnable snippets, 13 passed, 1 failed, 7 reasoned)

Dimensions: commands_work 2, content_accuracy 3, completeness 2, clarity 4, structure 3, safety 4.

  • passed β€” git/ruby/gem/bundle/jekyll --version sandbox capability probe.
  • passed β€” Chapter 1 full styled index.html written; git add index.html && git commit succeeded.
  • passed β€” Chapter 3 gem install --user-install jekyll bundler.
  • failed β€” Chapter 3 jekyll new . --force β†’ reproducible Bundler::PermissionError on a standard Linux Ruby (system gem dir). This is the blocking failure a beginner hits.
  • passed β€” Chapter 3 Gemfile, _config.yml, index.markdown, and bundle install (in isolation, once the gem path issue is worked around).
  • reasoned β€” bundle exec jekyll serve / clone / push steps (require network or a running server; not executed).

Engine summary (quoted): "The quest's git/HTML/YAML/front-matter content is accurate and all verified working, but the Jekyll chapter has two reproducible blocking failures … plus a silent bug where Chapter 3's Jekyll content never actually gets published because the old Chapter 1 index.html is never removed."

2. it-journey-stack-analysis β€” no verdict ⚠️

The engine errored (claude exited 1, terminal_reason: max_turns, "Reached maximum number of turns (40)"). The recorded transcript shows it repeatedly attempting network probes (curl -sI https://github.com, git ls-remote https://github.com/bamr87/it-journey) that the sandbox refused, exhausting the turn budget before it could score. No dimensions, no score, no snippet coverage exist for this quest β€” I did not fabricate any. Reasoning is static only (see Issues / Chain Continuity).

Dimensions: commands_work 0, content_accuracy 1, completeness 0, clarity 1, structure 1, safety 5.

  • passed β€” link liveness probes returned HTTP codes for travis-ci.org, mermaidjs.github.io, jekyllrb.com, mathjax.org.
  • skipped β€” https://github.com/{{ site.github_user }}/{{ site.github_user }}.github.io (row 1) β€” an unrendered Liquid template link, not a real URL.
  • There are no runnable instructional snippets because the quest teaches no procedure.

Engine summary (quoted): "This 'quest' is essentially the author's personal bookmarks/tools table for their own website, not an instructional tutorial β€” it has no runnable code, no actual GitHub Pages setup steps, broken unrendered Jekyll template syntax, a duplicated URL row, and an explicit admission that its objectives are unfinished placeholder text." I confirmed this by reading the source (see Issues).

4. self-operating-website-01-the-summoning β€” no verdict ⚠️

The engine errored (claude exited 1, terminal_reason: max_turns). The transcript shows permission_denials for gem list bundler, curl -sI https://rubygems.org, and curl https://api.github.com/... β€” the quest's Chapter-1 setup and its OAuth-driven agent steps need network/credentials the sandbox denies, so the engine ran out of turns without a verdict. No score exists; reasoning is static only.

5. seo-optimization β€” 75% ⚠️ (ran 9/5 runnable snippets, 8 passed, 1 failed, 2 skipped, 2 reasoned)

Dimensions: commands_work 3, content_accuracy 4, completeness 4, clarity 4, structure 5, safety 4.

  • passed β€” Linux path bundle add jekyll-seo-tag jekyll-sitemap && bundle exec jekyll serve built and served.
  • passed β€” curl -s http://127.0.0.1:4000/sitemap.xml | head returned a real sitemap.
  • passed β€” curl -s http://127.0.0.1:4000/ | grep -i '<meta' showed the injected meta tags; {% seo %} tag, Open Graph tags, robots.txt, and the JSON-LD Article example all verified.
  • failed β€” the Chapter 2 _config.yml sample lists plugins: [jekyll-seo-tag, jekyll-sitemap, jekyll-feed] but no setup step ever runs bundle add jekyll-feed, producing a reproducible Jekyll::Errors::MissingDependencyException build crash.
  • skipped β€” Windows PowerShell path and the macOS sips/imageoptim image steps (OS-specific / not safe-runnable in the Linux sandbox).

Engine summary (quoted): "Hands-on execution confirms the quest's core technical claims are accurate … However, I reproduced one real, learner-facing bug: the Chapter 2 _config.yml sample enables jekyll-feed without ever instructing the learner to install that gem, which crashes the build."

🐞 Issues Found

Grouped by quest. Each cites what was observed (engine command result = tested; my static read of the source = reasoned).

github-pages-portal

  • high Β· Chapter 3 / jekyll new . --force Β· what: tested β€” reproducible Bundler::PermissionError/permission failure when Bundler writes to a shared system gem dir (e.g. Ubuntu ruby-full). fix: document bundle config set --local path vendor/bundle (or bundle install --path vendor/bundle) before jekyll new/bundle install.
  • high Β· Chapter 3 / after gem install --user-install jekyll bundler Β· what: tested β€” the installed jekyll/bundle binaries are not on PATH in a fresh shell, so the very next command isn't found. The source (lines ~365–371) already explains the FilePermissionError and --user-install, but never adds the PATH export. fix: add export PATH="$(ruby -e 'puts Gem.user_dir')/bin:$PATH" and how to persist it in ~/.bashrc/~/.zshrc.
  • high Β· Chapter 1 β†’ Chapter 3 transition Β· what: tested β€” leaving Chapter 1's index.html in place while adding Chapter 3's index.markdown makes Jekyll silently publish the old static page and drop all Chapter-3 Liquid content, with no error. fix: instruct learners to delete/rename index.html when adding index.markdown.
  • medium Β· Custom Domain ("Custom Domain Enchantment") Β· what: reasoned β€” listed as a required/validation objective (frontmatter validation_criteria, objectives lines ~86, 481–486) but only referenced in diagrams/checklists; there is no CNAME/DNS/HTTPS walkthrough. fix: add a concrete custom-domain mini-procedure or demote it to explicitly optional.
  • low Β· Chapter 3 (github-pages gem) Β· what: reasoned β€” the github-pages gem pins an older Jekyll (3.x) than the jekyll new scaffold (4.x), so output can differ after the Gemfile is swapped. fix: note the version pin.

personal-site

  • high Β· whole quest Β· what: reasoned β€” the body (lines 67–92) is a static table of the author's own service URLs, not a GitHub Pages tutorial; commands_work=0, completeness=0 in the engine's scoring. fix: replace with real steps (create <username>.github.io repo β†’ add index.html/_config.yml β†’ push β†’ enable Pages).
  • high Β· Objectives (lines 59–63) Β· what: reasoned β€” auto-seeded placeholder objectives plus a literal admission note: "objectives auto-seeded during framework alignment β€” authors should refine these." fix: write concrete, checkable objectives.
  • medium Β· URL table (rows 1–2, 4, 6) Β· what: reasoned β€” {% raw %}{{ site.github_user }}{% endraw %} renders as literal template text in the quest body (row 1 confirmed skipped by the engine as a non-URL). fix: substitute a concrete example username or drop the {% raw %} wrapping.
  • medium Β· row 6 vs row 2 Β· what: reasoned β€” row 6 (labelled "hosted by Cloudflare") points at the same .github.io URL as row 2. fix: correct the duplicate.
  • low Β· row 3 (Travis CI) Β· what: tested (link probe ran) β€” Travis CI's free OSS tier ended years ago. fix: recommend GitHub Actions.

seo-optimization

  • high Β· Chapter 2 _config.yml vs bundle add commands Β· what: tested β€” reproduced Jekyll::Errors::MissingDependencyException: jekyll-feed is in the plugins: list but never installed. fix: add jekyll-feed to the four bundle add commands, or remove it from _config.yml and its table row.
  • low Β· Chapter 1 examples Β· what: tested/reasoned β€” the worked title is 48 chars (target ~50–60) and description 119 chars (target ~150–160), so the examples miss their own stated ranges. fix: adjust examples to land in range.
  • low Β· Chapter 4 imageoptim assets/images/ Β· what: reasoned β€” overwrites images in place (lossy) with no backup warning. fix: add a one-line "copy/commit originals first" note.

it-journey-stack-analysis (no engine verdict β€” reasoned only)

  • low/observational Β· Objectives (lines 79–80) Β· what: reasoned β€” same auto-seeded placeholder objectives pattern as personal-site ("Understand the core concepts introduced in this quest"). Worth a maintainer check, but not a tested failure β€” the engine never scored this quest.

No issues are asserted for self-operating-website-01-the-summoning beyond the coverage gap below: it never received a verdict, and I will not manufacture defects for an unscored quest.

πŸ”— Chain Continuity

Reading the window as one learner's path:

  • This window is not a coherent ordered lesson β€” it is a themed grab-bag. All five quests carry empty quest_dependencies (required_quests: [], unlocks_quests: []), so nothing in the slice explicitly hands off to anything else. A learner arriving from quest N gains no declared readiness for N+1; the ordering is planner-derived, not authored.
  • A real Jekyll/GitHub Pages spine exists but is fractured. github-pages-portal (Ch.3) teaches Jekyll setup, and seo-optimization assumes an already-built, servable Jekyll site (cd ~/my-site && bundle add …). In principle the portal quest is the prerequisite for the SEO quest β€” but the portal's Jekyll chapter has the three blockers above, so a learner following the chain literally would be stuck before they ever reach the SEO quest that depends on it. The prerequisite is implied, never declared, and currently broken.
  • personal-site breaks the journey outright. Placed mid-chain, it delivers no procedure and no state β€” a learner gains nothing and is handed placeholder objectives. It doesn't advance the path; it interrupts it.
  • self-operating-website-01-the-summoning is mis-levelled for this window. Its own prerequisites demand "a live zer0-mistakes Jekyll site (complete the prequel epic first)", GitHub Actions familiarity, and a Claude Code OAuth token β€” far beyond an 🌱 Apprentice who is still learning jekyll new. It also recommends /quests/codex/self-operating-website/ and unlocks a Level-0100 chapter, so it reads as the entry point of a separate advanced campaign that happens to be tagged 0001, not a natural neighbor of the portal/SEO basics. A beginner would hit a hard prerequisite wall.
  • it-journey-stack-analysis is a reflective side quest, not a build step; it neither depends on nor prepares the others. Fine as optional colour, but it doesn't knit the chain together.

Net: the portal β†’ SEO pair could be a real two-step learning arc if the portal's Jekyll blockers were fixed and the dependency were declared; the other three quests are essentially independent tenants of the same level rather than links in a chain.

🧠 Reasoning & Method

  • Mode: execute, sandboxed. I consumed the sealed evidence (walk-evidence.json / walk-evidence.md) exactly as the workflow produced it β€” I did not re-run the engine (its child claude processes can't authenticate from my Bash tool) and I did not edit walk-plan.json or the evidence files. Every passed/failed/skipped/reasoned above is transcribed from that evidence; every item I judged from the quest source myself is labeled reasoned (walker).
  • What I ran vs. reasoned: the engine ran the sandbox commands (git/HTML/YAML/Jekyll builds, curl server + link probes) for the three scored quests. I additionally read all five quest sources in plan order to assess the linked journey, prerequisites, and ordering β€” that is the reasoning layer the isolated per-quest scoring can't provide.
  • Coverage gaps (stated honestly):
  • 2 of 5 quests (it-journey-stack-analysis, self-operating-website-01-the-summoning) have NO score β€” the engine hit its 40-turn cap after the sandbox denied the network/credential access those quests require. Their transcripts confirm repeated permission_denials on curl/git ls-remote/gem calls. I report them as errored / no verdict and offer only static reasoning; I did not invent scores, dimensions, or snippet coverage for them.
  • Network-dependent and OS-specific snippets (git push, bundle exec jekyll serve over the network, Windows PowerShell paths, macOS sips/imageoptim) were reasoned/skipped, not executed β€” expected in a network-restricted Linux sandbox.
  • This is a windowed walk (window 2 of 6; 5 of the level's 26 quests). The rest of Level 0001 is out of scope for this run and covered by other windows in the perfection sweep.
  • Confidence: High on the three scored quests (each finding is backed by an actually-run command with a reproduced error). Medium-low on the two unscored quests (static read only β€” flagged as such, not as tested failures). The overall_verdict: fail reflects 0 pass / 1 warn / 4 fail with a 50.0% average and two genuinely broken quests on the level's main spine.

Machine evidence appendix: see ./walk-evidence.md (summary table + full recommendations) and ./walk-evidence.json (per-dimension scores, commands, snippet coverage). Total engine cost this run: $2.8206.
