2026 07 13 Game Developer 0111¶
π― Session Summary¶
I walked the first window (5 of 10 quests) of the Game Developer β Level 0111 β API Development (βοΈ Adventurer) slice as a learner, driving the planned quests in dependency order through the sandboxed agentic execute engine (evidence sealed by the workflow) and then reasoning about the chain from each quest's source.
Headline: the slice does not hold together as a learning path β it fails. The front half is excellent: API Fundamentals (89), Agents in the SDLC (88), and REST Principles (89) all passed with every runnable snippet executing and producing the output the quest claims. But the two closing quests of the GH-600 track are functionally broken β Initiation Rites: Embedding Agents in the SDLC (49) and The Three Sigils: Plan, Reason, Act (25) both send the learner into a work/gh-600 sandbox directory and a scripts/validate_quest.py validator that do not exist in the repository (I confirmed both on the host, corroborating the sandbox), and The Three Sigils additionally has a markdown fence-nesting bug that collapses ~60% of the page into one malformed code block. A learner who reaches quest 4 dead-ends on the very first setup command.
The good news for a maintainer: the failures are concentrated, systemic (one missing scaffold + one missing script shared across two quests), and mechanically fixable β not conceptual. The prose in all five quests is accurate.
πΊοΈ The Journey¶
| # | Verdict | Quest | Score | Takeaway |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | β | API Fundamentals: HTTP, Requests, and JSON | 89 | Exemplary hands-on quest β every curl/Python/JS/jq snippet ran and matched. |
| 2 | β | Initiation Rites: Agents in the SDLC | 88 | Self-contained GH-600 chapter; its lab builds a fresh scratch repo, so it actually works. |
| 3 | β | REST Principles: Resources, Statelessness, and Maturity | 89 | Clean, accurate REST/RMM quest; live curl+jq calls verified. |
| 4 | β | Initiation Rites: Embedding Agents in the SDLC | 49 | Setup cds into a nonexistent work/gh-600; final validator script missing. Unfollowable. |
| 5 | β | The Three Sigils: Plan, Reason, Act | 25 | Broken nested fences collapse most of the file; same phantom sandbox + missing script + inconsistent schema path. |
Average 68.0 Β· 3 pass / 2 fail Β· engine cost β $3.65.
π¬ Evidence¶
All per-quest verdicts below come from the sealed walk-evidence.json (mode: execute, mock: false) β commands actually run in the disposable sandbox. Where I add my own static confirmation on the host repo, I label it reasoned.
1 Β· API Fundamentals β 89 β (ran 11/10 runnable snippets, 0 failed)¶
Dimensions: commands_work 5, content_accuracy 4, completeness 3, clarity 5, structure 5, safety 5.
- curl https://jsonplaceholder.typicode.com/posts/1 β exact JSON shown in the quest
(userId 1, id 1). passed
- curl -X POST .../posts -H "Content-Type: application/json" -d '{...}' β 201 with
echoed body plus "id": 101, exactly as the quest claims. passed
- curl -s -o /dev/null -w "%{http_code}\n" .../posts/9999 β 404, matching the
inline comment. passed
- Python requests snippet β 200 + exact title; Node fetch (Node v20.20.2) β 200
+ identical title. passed
- Novice challenge: .../users/octocat β 200, jq .public_repos β 8. passed
- Only ding: the curl -v illustration shows HTTP/1.1 200 OK, but modern curl (8.5.0)
negotiates HTTP/2 by default, so a learner sees HTTP/2 200 (no reason phrase). reasoned/tested friction, not an error.
2 Β· Initiation Rites: Agents in the SDLC β 88 β (ran 5/5, 0 failed)¶
Dimensions: commands_work 4, content_accuracy 5, completeness 4, clarity 4, structure 5, safety 5.
- The standalone scripts/agent-trace.sh ran and produced the exact JSONL trace output
the quest shows. passed
- YAML workflows, permissions: blocks, and gh syntax all verified correct.
- The four gh-CLI lab steps (Steps 1β5) need a live authenticated GitHub account, so
they were skipped in-sandbox but read as syntactically correct. Honestly labeled.
- Key structural strength (see Chain Continuity): this quest's lab creates a fresh
scratch repo (gh repo create codex-rites-lab) instead of assuming work/gh-600, which is why it works where quests 4β5 do not.
3 Β· REST Principles β 89 β (ran 6/6, 0 failed)¶
Dimensions: commands_work 5, content_accuracy 4, completeness 3, clarity 5, structure 5, safety 5.
- curl -s .../comments?postId=1&_limit=3 | jq 'length' and the GitHub _url-count
jq snippet ran against live APIs (via docker-tunneled curl, host net sandboxed) and returned sane results. passed
- Constraints table, RMM ladder, and HATEOAS JSON example are all correct.
- Dings: a stated-but-never-taught "Idempotency and Safety" secondary objective and one
dead MDN resource link.
4 Β· Initiation Rites: Embedding Agents in the SDLC β 49 β (ran 7, 3 failed)¶
Dimensions: commands_work 1, content_accuracy 3, completeness 2, clarity 3, structure 3, safety 5.
- Setup (line 158β159 bash / 175β176 PowerShell): git clone .../it-journey.git then
cd it-journey/work/gh-600 β the sandbox clone succeeds but work/gh-600 does not exist in the repo, so the cd/Set-Location failed on both shells.
- Quest Validation (line 342): python3 scripts/validate_quest.py --quest q1 references
a script that does not exist. failed
- Exercises 1.1/1.2/1.3/1.5 write into work/gh-600/notes|task-cards|diagrams/β¦ β
paths under the phantom sandbox, so every hands-on step is unfollowable as written.
- Host confirmation (reasoned): ls work/gh-600 β No such file or directory;
find . -name validate_quest.py β no results. Corroborates the sandbox exactly.
- Conceptual content (agent-vs-assistant table, SDLC decision grid, anti-patterns,
Mermaid) is solid β the failure is purely the broken exercise scaffold.
5 Β· The Three Sigils: Plan, Reason, Act β 25 β (ran 12, 3 failed)¶
Dimensions: commands_work 0, content_accuracy 2, completeness 1, clarity 1, structure 1, safety 4.
- Fence-nesting bug (verified with a CommonMark parser + by running the "runnable"
block, which errored): the Chapter 2 block opens ```markdown (line 150), nests ```json (line 162), then "closes" with ```markdown (line 178) and stray ```bash/```text fences (lines 200, 235, 249, 316, 347). Because a CommonMark closing fence must be bare, everything from ~line 121 to EOF collapses into one malformed code block β Chapters 3β5, Quest Validation, Rewards, and the Knowledge Graph render as literal text. failed
- Chapter 3 saves the schema to work/gh-600/schemas/agent-plan.json (line 206) but the
validation snippet also opens work/gh-600/sample-plan.json (line 244) β a file the quest never creates β so it 404s. failed
- Chapter 4 workflow reads .github/schemas/agent-plan.json (line 285) β inconsistent
with the Chapter 3 save path. Plus scripts/validate_quest.py again (line 339).
- Same phantom work/gh-600 sandbox as quest 4 (host-confirmed missing).
Machine summary (verbatim from
walk-evidence.md): "5 quests evaluated Β· β 3 pass Β· β οΈ 0 warn Β· β 2 fail Β· avg 68.0%".
π Issues Found¶
High
1. agentic-sdlc-integration.md Β· Setup / "Choose Your Adventure Platform" (bash L158,
PowerShell L176) β cd it-journey/work/gh-600 dead-ends. Observed: sandbox cd failed; host ls work/gh-600 β No such file or directory. Fix: ship a work/gh-600/{notes,task-cards,diagrams,schemas,samples} scaffold in the repo, or change the instructions to have learners mkdir -p work/gh-600/{notes,task-cards,diagrams} themselves. As written the first command sequence blocks every learner on every OS.
2. agentic-sdlc-integration.md Β· Quest Validation (L342) & agentic-plan-vs-action-boundaries.md
Β· Quest Validation (L339) β scripts/validate_quest.py does not exist. Observed: sandbox python3 scripts/validate_quest.py failed; host find returns nothing. Fix:
implement the script (matching the documented --quest q1|q2 flags and expected output)
or replace the section with a manual self-review checklist.
3. agentic-plan-vs-action-boundaries.md Β· Chapters 2β5 markdown fences β nested/stray
fences collapse ~60% of the file. Observed: CommonMark parse + running the block errored. Fix: stop nesting same-style fences β use a 4-backtick outer wrapper for the copilot-instructions.md sample and put the JSON schema in its own top-level fence; remove the bogus ```bash/```text/```markdown closers (lines 200, 235, 249, 316, 347) that were meant to close outer blocks.
4. agentic-plan-vs-action-boundaries.md Β· Chapter 3 validation snippet (L242β248) β
opens work/gh-600/sample-plan.json that the quest never creates. Fix: add a step that writes sample-plan.json (show its contents) before the jsonschema.validate call.
5. agentic-plan-vs-action-boundaries.md Β· schema path mismatch β saved to
work/gh-600/schemas/agent-plan.json (L206) but the workflow reads .github/schemas/agent-plan.json (L285). Fix: make the two paths agree.
Medium
6. agentic-plan-vs-action-boundaries.md Β· Exercise numbering skips 2.2 (2.1 at L148,
then 2.3 at L255). Fix: label the Chapter 3 schema exercise 2.2.
7. agentic-plan-vs-action-boundaries.md Β· Chapter 4 uses actions/GitHub-script@v7
(L299). Fix: use canonical actions/github-script@v7.
8. rest-principles.md Β· secondary objective "Idempotency and Safety" (L109) is stated
but never taught in the body. Fix: add a short section or drop the objective.
Low
9. api-fundamentals.md Β· Chapter 1 curl -v illustration shows HTTP/1.1 200 OK
(L226/234) but modern curl negotiates HTTP/2 (HTTP/2 200, no reason phrase). Fix: note that HTTP/2 output differs, or add --http1.1 to the illustrated command.
10. Mermaid \n line-breaks render literally β e.g. Q2[π― Q2: The Three Sigils\nPlan
vs Action] (agentic-sdlc-integration.md L104β106, agentic-plan-vs-action-boundaries.md
L88). Fix: use <br/>.
11. rest-principles.md Β· one dead MDN resource link (HATEOAS glossary, flagged by the
engine). Fix: update to a live URL.
No blocking issues in quests 1β3.
π Chain Continuity¶
The planner windowed this level (10 quests β this run walked 1β5) and dependency-sorted them, which interleaves two independent tracks that both live at level 0111:
- API Design Mastery track (quest_series "API Design Mastery", quest_line "The
Gatekeeper's Road"):
api-fundamentalsβrest-principlesβ β¦ . This chain is clean.rest-principlesdeclaresrequired_quests: [/quests/0111/api-fundamentals/], and a learner finishing quest 1 genuinely has the HTTP/JSON/curl fluency quest 3 assumes. No gap. - The Agentic Codex / GH-600 track: the hub chapter
agentic-codex-01-agents-in-the-sdlc(quest 2) introduces bounded agents, plan-then-act, and observability, and explicitly links its three Domain-1 sub-quests βagentic-sdlc-integration(quest 4, "Q⅓") andagentic-plan-vs-action-boundaries(quest 5, "Q⅔"). Conceptually 2 β 4 β 5 is coherent.
The critical continuity break: there appear to be two generations of Domain 1 content. Quest 2 (dated 2026-06-30, the "Codex" rewrite) is self-contained β its hands-on lab creates a fresh scratch repo with gh repo create codex-rites-lab, so it runs. Quests 4 and 5 (dated 2026-05-17, the older gh-600 series) still assume a work/gh-600 sandbox baked into the it-journey repo that does not exist, plus a validate_quest.py that does not exist. So the good hub (quest 2) funnels learners straight into the broken older sub-quests via its "The Quests of This Domain" links. A game-developer who follows the intended order hits a wall at quest 4's first cd.
Ordering note: agentic-sdlc-integration lists rest-principles as a recommended quest β a slightly odd cross-track pairing (REST recommended before an agentic-SDLC quest) but harmless. The two agentic quests' own prerequisite chain (4 requires nothing; 5 requires 4) is internally consistent; it just rests on missing scaffolding.
Character-fit observation (not a bug): none of this slice is game-dev-flavored β it's generic API + agentic-AI content shared across character paths. API Fundamentals and REST are directly useful to a game developer (leaderboards, matchmaking, backend calls); the GH-600 agentic material is more tangential to game dev but part of the common curriculum.
π§ Reasoning & Method¶
- Mode:
execute(sandboxed), evidence sealed by the workflow β I consumedwalk-plan.json+walk-evidence.json/.mdas-is and did not re-run the engine (its childclaudeprocesses can't authenticate from my Bash tool). No--mock. - What I ran vs. reasoned: all
passed/failed/skippedverdicts are the engine's real sandbox executions (curl/python/node/jq/bash, docker-tunneled where host net was restricted). I independentlyreasonedover each quest's full source in plan order, and I ran two read-only host checks (ls work/gh-600,find -name validate_quest.py) that confirmed the two missing-artifact failures β I did not modify anything. - Coverage/limits: the
gh-CLI lab steps in quests 2, 4, and 5 require a live authenticated GitHub account with Copilot and were not executed (correctly skipped); I judged their syntax statically. Chapter 5 of quest 5 depends on real Copilot coding-agent access most learners lack. Host network was sandboxed (curl reached live APIs via docker tunnel). This was window 1 of 2 β quests 6β10 of the level were not walked this run. - Confidence: High on the two failures (independently reproduced on the host) and on the three passes (every runnable snippet executed clean). Medium on the "two generations of content" root-cause hypothesis β inferred from dates + the differing sandbox strategies, not from repo history.
One slice, one report. No quest content was modified; fixes above are for a content pass.
