2026 07 24 Game Developer 0001¶
π― Session Summary¶
I walked a date-rotated window (3 of 6) of the Game Developer β Level 0001 "Web Fundamentals" (Apprentice) track: 5 linked quests out of the level's 26, in planner order. The slice is really two disjoint threads stitched together by level, not one narrative arc β a Foundation/Jekyll pair (stating-the-stats, terminal-mastery) and the tightly-coupled Contributor Identity sub-arc (forge-your-character β avatar-forge β badge-collector).
Headline verdict: FAIL. The sealed execute engine scored 3 of 5 quests (avg 60%: one warn, two fail) and errored out on the other two at the 40-turn cap, so those carry no machine evidence. Of what was executed: terminal-mastery (42%) has a real, reproducible defect pattern β copy/move/grep examples that operate on files never created earlier in the walkthrough, so a beginner copy-pasting in order hits repeated "No such file or directory" errors β plus an entire Primary Objective (process management) that is essentially untaught. avatar-forge (79%, warn) is the healthiest quest here. badge-collector (59%) is internally consistent but its two runnable commands both failed in the isolated sandbox because it silently assumes the full IT-Journey repo scaffold and never restates a bundle install prerequisite. Reasoning statically, I also found a content-accuracy bug in stating-the-stats: its generator targets pages/_posts/, a directory the repo no longer contains (the blog was extracted to lifehacker.dev), so the "Expected output: Total posts: 76" a learner is promised will actually be 0.
πΊοΈ The Journey¶
| # | Verdict | Quest | Score | One-line takeaway |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | β οΈβ | Forging the Stats Portal: Data Analytics Quest | β (engine error) | No machine score (max_turns); reasoned: generator points at removed pages/_posts/ β learner gets 0 posts, not the promised 76. |
| 2 | β | Terminal Mastery: Conquering the Command-Line Realm | 42 | Solid Ch.1β2, but Ch.3β4 cp/mv/grep examples hit files never created; process-management objective untaught. |
| 3 | β οΈβ | Forge Your Character: Crafting Your Contributor Identity | β (engine error) | No machine score (max_turns); reasoned: all referenced scaffold (template, generator, make target) exists in-repo, so likely sound β but unverified. |
| 4 | β οΈ | Avatar Forge: Crafting Your Digital Portrait | 79 | Healthiest quest; mkdir/cp verified working; only gaps are step ordering, unexplained "fallback" check, missing bundle install. |
| 5 | β | Badge Collector: Showcasing Your Achievements | 59 | Well-structured, but both runnable commands failed in the isolated sandbox (missing repo scaffold + bundler); auto-regeneration vs. manual-edit ambiguity. |
β = engine produced no score; verdict shown is reasoned-only, not from an executed run.
π¬ Evidence¶
All numbers below come verbatim from the sealed walk-evidence.json (execute mode). I did not re-run the engine.
1. Forging the Stats Portal β β no machine evidence¶
- Engine outcome:
claude exited 1 β¦ "errors":["Reached maximum number of turns (40)"],terminal_reason: max_turns.overall: 0.0, no dimensions, no snippet counts. This is an infrastructure timeout on the engine's longest quest (1072 lines: full Ruby generator + a large Liquid template), not a graded content failure. - Snippet coverage: none executed by the engine (
ran 0). - Everything I say about this quest below is reasoned from reading the source + repo facts, labelled as such.
2. Terminal Mastery β β 42 Β· executed¶
- Snippets:
ran 16/21(13 passed Β· 3 failed Β· 2 skipped Β· 3 reasoned),weight_covered: 1.0. - Per-dimension: commands_work 2 Β· content_accuracy 2 Β· completeness 1 Β· clarity 2 Β· structure 3 Β· safety 4.
- Failed command β Ch.3 Step 2 (
cp/mvblock), observed:"
cp -r projects/ backup-projects/fails ('No such file or directory') since projects/ isn't inside terminal-practice.mv β¦/backups/,mv *.css styles/, andcp -i β¦/backup/all fail ('Not a directory' / 'No such file or directory') because backups/, styles/, and backup/ were never created earlier in the quest. Onlycp quest-log.md quest-backup.mdandmv hello.js welcome.jssucceed as written." - Failed command β Ch.3 Step 3 (
rmblock), observed:"As literally written, all target files/dirs (temp-file.txt, *.tmp, old-project/, unwanted-file.txt, *.log) don't exist β¦ and would error 'No such file or directory'. Verified the underlying syntax is correct by manually creating the referenced dummy files/dirs first."
- Failed command β Ch.4 Step 2 (
grepblock), observed:"
grep \"terminal\"(lowercase) returns nothing against the quest's own learning-notes.txt content, which only has capitalized 'Terminal' β contradicts the comment.grep -r projects/,grep -n logfile.txt, grep file-list.txt, andgrep -E logs.txtall target files/dirs never created earlier." - Skipped (reasoned): the macOS Homebrew
curl | bashinstaller and the Windowswsl --install/sudo apt upgradepath β correctly treated as live system/network installs out of safe-sandbox scope.
3. Forge Your Character β β no machine evidence¶
- Engine outcome: same failure mode as quest 1 β
claude exited 1 β¦ "Reached maximum number of turns (40)",overall: 0.0, no dimensions/snippets. Engine timeout, not a graded verdict. - Reasoned scaffold check (read-only, host repo): every artifact the quest tells the learner to copy exists today β
_data/contributors/_template.ymlβ ,scripts/generation/generate_contributor_stats.rbβ , thecontributor-statsMake target β (3 matches inMakefile), andpages/_about/contribute/contributors/_template/β . So the quest's core mechanics are plausibly sound, but this is inference, not execution β I have zero runtime evidence for it.
4. Avatar Forge β β οΈ 79 Β· executed¶
- Snippets:
ran 3of 2 runnable (mkdir/cp + both YAML blocks) β 3 passed Β· 0 failed Β· 1 skipped. - Per-dimension: commands_work 4 Β· content_accuracy 4 Β· completeness 3 Β· clarity 4 Β· structure 4 Β· safety 5.
- Passed (verified directly):
mkdir -p assets/images/contributors && cp β¦ YOUR_USERNAME.pngβ the asset-hosting mechanic works as written; both YAML avatar snippets are valid. - Skipped:
bundle exec jekyll serveβ depends on the full IT-Journey repo scaffold not present in the sandbox; sanity-checked syntactically only. - Engine summary: "nothing is broken or unsafe."
5. Badge Collector β β 59 Β· executed¶
- Snippets:
ran 2of 2 runnable β 0 passed Β· 2 failed Β· plus 2 reasoned (the thresholdtextblock and thebadges_pinnedYAML block, both internally consistent). - Per-dimension: commands_work 2 Β· content_accuracy 3 Β· completeness 3 Β· clarity 3 Β· structure 4 Β· safety 5.
- Failed β
make contributor-stats β¦ && cat β¦, observed:"
makeerrored: 'No rule to make target 'contributor-stats'. Stop.' (exit 2). The subsequentcaterrored: 'No such file or directory' (exit 1). Failure driven by the sandbox lacking the prerequisite repo (Makefile, Ruby generator, contributor data dir), which the quest assumes is already set up β¦ but does not restate." - Failed β
bundle exec jekyll serve, observed:"'bundle: command not found' (exit 127) β bundler isn't installed and no Gemfile/bundle-install step is given anywhere in the quest before this command is invoked."
- Caveat: the
makefailure is largely a sandbox-isolation artifact β in a real cloned repo the target exists (I confirmed it). The genuinely reportable gap is the missingbundle installprerequisite and the unresolved manual-edit-vs-auto-regeneration question.
π Issues Found¶
Grouped by quest; every item cites either an executed command (tested) or a quoted source line / verified repo fact (reasoned).
High severity¶
-
terminal-masteryΒ· Ch.3 Step ⅔ & Ch.4 Step 2 Β· tested β Copy/move/grep examples operate on files & directories (backups/,styles/,backup/,projects/,logfile.txt,file-list.txt,logs.txt,*.tmp,*.log,old-project/) that were never created earlier in the walkthrough. A beginner running the blocks in order hits repeatedNo such file or directory/Not a directoryerrors (3 executed snippet failures). Fix: addmkdir -p backups styles backup(and touch the referenced files) before the examples, or rewrite them to use only artifacts the tutorial actually creates (quest-log.md, hello.js, style.css, learning-notes.txt). -
terminal-masteryΒ· Primary Objective "Process Management" Β· tested (completeness ⅕) β One of four stated Primary Objectives is essentially untaught: the whole topic is a singleps aux | grep "node"line plus a comment-only "Master Challenge." Fix: add a real chapter coveringps,top/htop,kill,jobs/bg/fg,df -h,free -h,uptimewith runnable examples. -
stating-the-statsΒ· Ch.2 generator Β· reasoned (repo-verified) β The generator sets@posts_dir = β¦/pages/_postsand only counts posts there; butpages/_posts/does not exist in this repo (the blog was extracted to lifehacker.dev per project docs β I confirmedtest -d pages/_postsβ NO).Dir.exist?short-circuits, so the run yieldstotal_posts: 0, directly contradicting the quest's promised "Expected Output β¦ Total posts: 76." A learner will think they broke something. Fix: point the generator at live content collections (e.g.pages/_quests,pages/_docs) or update the narrative + expected output to reflect the current site structure.
Medium severity¶
-
terminal-masteryΒ· Ch.4 Step 2 Β· tested βgrep "terminal" learning-notes.txtreturns nothing because the file (created via heredoc in Ch.3) contains only capitalized "Terminal," contradicting the inline comment "Find lines containing 'terminal'." Fix: usegrep -i, or match the file's actual casing. -
terminal-masteryΒ· Ch.1 Β· reasoned β Hardcoded# Expected output: bamr87(the author's own username) will never match a learner's machine. Fix: use<your-username>and note output varies. -
badge-collectorΒ· Step 3 & Step 1 Β· tested/reasoned βbundle exec jekyll serveis the quest's first build command yet nobundle install/ Gemfile prerequisite is given (bundle: command not found, exit 127). Separately, Step ½ never resolves whether a manualbadges_pinnededit survives the next stats-generator run. Fix: add abundle installprerequisite (or link the setup quest), and state explicitly thatbadges_pinnedis preserved across regeneration. -
avatar-forgeΒ· Steps 2β4 Β· reasoned β Step 2 references the image path in the data file before Step 3 copies the image into the repo (inverted dependency order); Step 4's "Fallback still works if image fails to load" checklist item has no instructions for how to test it. Fix: reorder copy-before-reference; describe the fallback test (point avatar at a broken URL, confirm identicon renders).
Low severity¶
-
terminal-masteryΒ· Ch.2 Step 2 Β· reasoned β The bare. .. ~ /symbol glossary sits inside a ```bash fence, so a learner told to "run every snippet" will try to execute it. Fix: move it to prose/a table. -
terminal-masteryΒ· platform paths Β· reasoned β The Homebrewcurl | bashinstaller andsudo apt upgradecarry no caution about modifying the system. Fix: add a one-line review-before-running note (safety scored ⅘, so minor). -
avatar-forge/badge-collectorΒ· end of quest Β· reasoned β Neither restates a commit/push step to actually submit the work, unlikeforge-your-characterStep 6. Fix: add a brief "commit & push" closer for consistency.
No blocking issues were found in forge-your-character or avatar-forge. avatar-forge is the cleanest quest in the slice; forge-your-character's scaffold all resolves in-repo (but was not executed β see Β§7).
π Chain Continuity¶
-
Two arcs, one window. The planner's date-rotated window bundles a Foundation/Jekyll pair with the three-part Contributor Identity arc. They don't form a single learning narrative β a Game-Developer learner arriving at "Level 0001" gets
stating-the-stats(a 60β90 min Jekyll/Ruby/Liquid build) as quest #1, which is considerably heavier than theterminal-masterybasics that logically precede it. Ordering observation: for a true beginner,terminal-masteryshould come beforestating-the-stats, not after. -
The Contributor sub-arc is well-linked.
forge-your-character(main) βavatar-forge(required prereq: forge) βbadge-collector(required: forge, recommended: avatar). Plan order (3 β 4 β 5) honors those dependencies exactly, and each downstream quest's frontmatter correctly declaresrequired_quests: [forge-your-character]. A learner who finishes #3 is set up for #4 and #5 β the data file, template, and generator that #4/#5 edit are all created in #3. -
Prerequisite gap across the window.
forge-your-characterlistsgit-workflow-masteryas a recommended prereq, which is not in this window β acceptable (it's recommended, not required, andterminal-masteryis present and does precede it). More materially:avatar-forgeandbadge-collectorboth assume the repo is already cloned and bundler is installed from #3, but neither restates abundle installstep, and the sealed engine β which scores each quest in isolation with no repo scaffold β surfaced exactly that gap as real command failures inbadge-collector. In the real linked journey a learner would have the scaffold from #3, so this is a "restate the prerequisite" gap rather than a hard break. -
Continuity risk in
stating-the-stats. Because its generator targets the now-removedpages/_posts/, the very first "success checkpoint" (matching 76 posts) fails silently. This is the single most likely place a learner in this slice gets stuck and can't tell whether they or the quest are at fault.
π§ Reasoning & Method¶
- Mode & evidence. Execute mode. I consumed the workflow-sealed
walk-plan.json+walk-evidence.json/.mdas-is β I did not run, regenerate, or edit the engine or its evidence (the engine's childclaudeprocesses can't authenticate from my Bash tool). Everypassed/failedin Β§4 is a command the sealed engine actually ran in its disposable sandbox; I quoted its observations verbatim (trimmed). - What I executed myself: only read-only existence checks against the host repo (
test -d,grep -conMakefile) to ground the two reasoned findings β I confirmedpages/_posts/is absent and that the contributor scaffold (_template.yml, generator, make target, profile template) is present. I made no content edits and touched nothing underpages/_quests/**. - Coverage & honesty caveats:
- 2 of 5 quests have NO machine score.
stating-the-statsandforge-your-characterboth tripped the engine's 40-turn cap and exited 1 β theirfail/0.0in the raw counts is an infrastructure timeout, not a quality judgment. I have labelled everything about them reasoned and did not report anypassed/failedfor them. This is the biggest coverage limit of this session: the two longest quests in the slice are the two I could only inspect statically. badge-collector's andavatar-forge'sbundle/makeresults reflect the isolated sandbox (no repo scaffold), so I distinguished genuine content gaps (missingbundle installprerequisite) from sandbox artifacts (themake contributor-statstarget does exist in the real repo).- Engine cost for the session: $2.08 across 5 quests.
- Confidence: High on the three executed verdicts and their cited command failures (directly reproducible). Medium on the
stating-the-stats_postsfinding (reasoned but repo-verified). Low/none onforge-your-characterruntime behavior β scaffold exists, but it was never executed, so treat its implied "probably fine" as unconfirmed.
