Docker Configuration Consolidation Change Documentation¶
Date: October 26, 2025 Type: Infrastructure Improvement Impact: High - Developer Experience Enhancement Breaking Changes: Minor (service name updates)
Summary¶
Consolidated 3 separate docker-compose files into a single unified configuration using Docker Compose profiles, significantly simplifying the development workflow and reducing configuration complexity.
Problem Statement¶
Before¶
- 3 separate docker-compose files: Root dev, production, and src duplicate
- Confusing setup process: Unclear which file to use for different scenarios
- Duplicate configuration: Maintenance overhead across multiple files
- Inconsistent environments: Different setups leading to "works on my machine" issues
- Complex documentation: Multiple command sets for different files
Impact¶
- New developer onboarding complexity
- Configuration drift between environments
- Maintenance overhead for multiple files
- Team confusion about correct commands
Solution Implemented¶
Architecture Changes¶
Unified Configuration¶
- Single
docker-compose.ymlwith profile-based environment switching - Profile system:
default(no profile): Development environmentproduction: Production environment with Gunicornjekyll: Development + Jekyll static site
Service Structure¶
services:
barodydb: # Always running (PostgreSQL)
web-dev: # Development (default profile)
web-prod: # Production (production profile)
jekyll: # Static site (jekyll profile)
Environment Management¶
- Centralized
.envconfiguration - Customizable ports to avoid conflicts
- Named networks and volumes for predictability
Command Simplification¶
| Task | Before | After |
|---|---|---|
| Development | docker-compose up |
docker-compose up β
|
| Production | docker-compose -f docker-compose.prod.yml up |
docker-compose --profile production up |
| Logs (Dev) | docker-compose logs web |
docker-compose logs web-dev |
| Django Shell | docker-compose exec web python manage.py shell |
docker-compose exec web-dev python manage.py shell |
