HTTPSConnectionPool(host='pypi.org', port=443): Read timed out.
ERROR: Failed to build 'django-allauth' when installing build dependencies for django-allauth
ModuleNotFoundError: No module named 'django'
Attempted Resolutions: 1. Increased pip timeout to 180 seconds 2. Added retry logic (5 retries) 3. Extended installation wait time to 3 minutes 4. All attempts resulted in same timeout error
Issues Identified and Resolved¶
Issue #1: Docker Compose V2 Compatibility ✅ FIXED¶
Severity: High Impact: Test scripts unable to run Status: Resolved
Description: Test scripts used docker-compose command (Docker Compose V1) but the CI/CD environment has Docker Compose V2 which uses docker compose command.
Root Cause:
# V1 command (used in scripts)
docker-compose -f docker-compose.yml up
# V2 command (available in environment)
docker compose -f docker-compose.yml up
Solution Implemented: Created compatibility wrapper at /usr/local/bin/docker-compose:
Validation: - Wrapper successfully translates V1 commands to V2 - All docker-compose commands now work correctly - Both syntaxes supported simultaneously
Files Modified: - None (runtime wrapper only)
Benefits: - Backward compatibility maintained - No code changes required - Works in both V1 and V2 environments
Issue #2: Netcat Not Available in Container ✅ FIXED¶
Severity: Medium Impact: Inter-container network test failing Status: Resolved
Description: Inter-container network connectivity test used nc (netcat) command which isn't available in the python:3.11-slim base image.
Root Cause:
# Original test command
docker_exec python nc -z barodydb 5432
# Error: nc: executable file not found in $PATH
Solution Implemented: Updated test to use Python's built-in socket module:
# New test command
docker_exec python python3 -c 'import socket; s = socket.socket(); s.settimeout(2); s.connect(("barodydb", 5432)); s.close()'
Validation: - Network connectivity test now passes - No additional dependencies required - More reliable than netcat approach
Files Modified:
- scripts/test-infrastructure.sh (line 206-208)
Benefits: - Uses Python standard library (always available) - More portable across different base images - Better error handling with timeout - Consistent with Python-based testing approach
Issue #3: Package Installation Wait Logic ✅ IMPROVED¶
Severity: Medium Impact: Tests running before packages installed Status: Improved (but still blocked by #4)
Description: Tests were running immediately after container startup, before package installation completed, causing false failures.
Root Cause:
# Original wait logic
log_info "Waiting for services to be ready..."
sleep 10 # Only 10 seconds - insufficient for package installation
Solution Implemented: Added intelligent wait logic that checks for Django installation:
# Wait for Django installation to complete
MAX_WAIT=180 # 3 minutes max wait
WAIT_COUNT=0
while [ $WAIT_COUNT -lt $MAX_WAIT ]; do
if docker-compose -f "$COMPOSE_FILE" exec -T python python3 -c "import django; print('Django installed')" 2>/dev/null | grep -q "Django installed"; then
log_success "Package installation completed"
break
fi
sleep 5
WAIT_COUNT=$((WAIT_COUNT + 5))
if [ $((WAIT_COUNT % 30)) -eq 0 ]; then
log_info "Still waiting for package installation... ($WAIT_COUNT seconds elapsed)"
fi
done
Validation: - Test script now waits appropriately for installation - Progress updates every 30 seconds - Timeout after 3 minutes with warning
Files Modified:
- scripts/test-infrastructure.sh (lines 178-204)
Benefits: - Tests no longer run prematurely - Better user feedback during wait - Configurable timeout period - Graceful handling of installation delays
Critical Blocker: PyPI Network Timeout¶
Issue #4: PyPI Network Timeout ❌ UNRESOLVED¶
Severity: Critical Impact: Complete testing blockage Status: Unresolved - Infrastructure issue
Description: Package installation consistently fails due to network timeouts when downloading from PyPI (pypi.org). This is a CI/CD infrastructure issue, not a code issue.
Error Pattern:
ReadTimeoutError: HTTPSConnectionPool(host='pypi.org', port=443): Read timed out.
ERROR: Failed to build 'django-allauth' when installing build dependencies
Specific Package: The failure occurs during installation of django-allauth[mfa,saml,socialaccount,steam] which has many build dependencies.
Investigation Results:
- Not a Code Issue:
- Syntax is correct
- Dependencies are properly specified
-
Build tools are available
-
Network Infrastructure Issue:
- PyPI is reachable but slow/unreliable in CI environment
- Timeouts occur during dependency download
-
Build dependencies fail to download completely
-
Attempts Made:
# Attempt 1: Increased timeout pip install --timeout 180 -r requirements.txt # Result: Still times out # Attempt 2: Added retries pip install --timeout 180 --retries 5 -r requirements.txt # Result: All retries exhausted, still fails # Attempt 3: Fallback to no-deps pip install --no-deps -r requirements.txt # Result: Would skip dependencies, breaks application
Impact: - Cannot install Django - Cannot run database tests - Cannot test application services - Cannot validate security features - Cannot complete comprehensive testing
Root Causes (Analysis):
- GitHub Actions Network Limits:
- May have rate limiting or bandwidth restrictions
-
Large packages may exceed timeout thresholds
-
django-allauth Complexity:
- Package has multiple extras (mfa, saml, socialaccount, steam)
- Requires many build dependencies
-
Large download size causes timeout
-
PyPI Server Performance:
- Possible PyPI server congestion
- Geographic latency to PyPI CDN nodes
Recommendations¶
Immediate Actions Required (High Priority)¶
1. Pre-build Docker Development Image¶
Priority: High Effort: Medium Impact: High
Description: Create a Docker image with all dependencies pre-installed to eliminate runtime installation failures.
Implementation:
# Dockerfile.dev
FROM python:3.11-slim AS base
# Install system dependencies
RUN apt-get update && apt-get install -y \
postgresql-client \
git \
build-essential \
pkg-config \
libcairo2-dev \
python3-dev \
&& rm -rf /var/lib/apt/lists/*
# Install Python dependencies
WORKDIR /workspace
COPY src/requirements.txt .
RUN pip install --upgrade pip && \
pip install --no-cache-dir -r requirements.txt
# Set up working directory
WORKDIR /workspace/src
# Command
CMD ["python", "manage.py", "runserver", "0.0.0.0:8000"]
Update docker-compose_dev.yml:
python:
build:
context: ..
dockerfile: Dockerfile.dev
# Remove pip install from command
command:
- /bin/bash
- -c
- |
mkdir -p /workspace/setup_data /workspace/logs
python manage.py migrate
python manage.py runserver 0.0.0.0:8000
Benefits: - Eliminates runtime installation failures - Faster container startup (30+ seconds → 5 seconds) - More reliable CI/CD pipeline - Dependencies cached in image layers - Consistent environment across runs
Trade-offs: - Larger image size (~500MB vs ~200MB) - Image rebuild required when dependencies change - Additional build step in CI/CD
2. Use PyPI Mirror or Caching Proxy¶
Priority: High Effort: Medium Impact: High
Description: Configure pip to use a PyPI caching proxy or mirror to improve reliability and speed.
Option A: Use pip cache in GitHub Actions:
# .github/workflows/infrastructure-test.yml
- name: Cache pip packages
uses: actions/cache@v3
with:
path: ~/.cache/pip
key: ${{ runner.os }}-pip-${{ hashFiles('**/requirements.txt') }}
restore-keys: |
${{ runner.os }}-pip-
Option B: Use PyPI mirror:
environment:
PIP_INDEX_URL: https://pypi.org/simple
PIP_TRUSTED_HOST: pypi.org
PIP_DEFAULT_TIMEOUT: 300
PIP_RETRIES: 5
Benefits: - Reduced PyPI network dependency - Faster package downloads - More reliable in CI/CD environments - Reduced bandwidth usage
3. Split Requirements into Base and Optional¶
Priority: Medium Effort: Low Impact: Medium
Description: Split requirements.txt into base requirements and optional extras to isolate problematic packages.
Implementation:
# src/requirements-base.txt
Django==4.2.20
djangorestframework
psycopg2-binary
gunicorn==23.0.0
django-environ
PyYAML
Markdown
# src/requirements-extras.txt
django-allauth[mfa,saml,socialaccount,steam]
django-import-export
django-json-widget
django-markdownify
django-filer
martor
# src/requirements-dev.txt
-r requirements-base.txt
-r requirements-extras.txt
pytest
pytest-django
pytest-cov
Update installation:
# Install base first (more reliable)
pip install -r requirements-base.txt
# Install extras with retry (can fail gracefully)
pip install -r requirements-extras.txt || echo "Some extras failed to install"
Benefits: - Core functionality works even if extras fail - Easier to identify problematic packages - Faster base installation - Better error isolation
Future Enhancements (Medium Priority)¶
4. Implement Container Health Checks¶
Priority: Medium Effort: Low Impact: Medium
Description: Add proper health checks to docker-compose configuration to ensure containers are truly ready before tests run.
Implementation:
python:
healthcheck:
test: ["CMD-SHELL", "python -c 'import django; django.setup()' || exit 1"]
interval: 10s
timeout: 5s
retries: 5
start_period: 60s
Benefits: - Automatic readiness verification - Better orchestration with depends_on - Clearer container status - Reduced test failures
5. Add Dependency Vulnerability Scanning¶
Priority: Medium Effort: Low Impact: High
Description: Add automated security scanning for Python dependencies.
Implementation:
# .github/workflows/security.yml
- name: Check Python dependencies
run: |
pip install safety
safety check --file requirements.txt
Benefits: - Early detection of vulnerable packages - Automated security compliance - Proactive security posture
6. Implement Progressive Timeout Strategy¶
Priority: Low Effort: Low Impact: Low
Description: Implement progressive timeout increases for pip install operations.
Implementation:
# Try with normal timeout first
pip install --timeout 60 -r requirements.txt || \
# Retry with increased timeout
pip install --timeout 180 -r requirements.txt || \
# Final attempt with maximum timeout
pip install --timeout 300 -r requirements.txt
Benefits: - Faster success in good network conditions - Better resilience in poor network conditions - Reduced overall wait time

Conclusion¶
The infrastructure testing successfully validated the initialization scripts and core Docker infrastructure. Two compatibility issues were identified and resolved:
- ✅ Docker Compose V2 compatibility - Fixed with wrapper
- ✅ Network connectivity testing - Fixed with Python socket approach
However, comprehensive testing is blocked by a critical infrastructure issue with PyPI network timeouts. This is not a code issue but rather a limitation of the CI/CD environment's network connectivity to PyPI.
Recommended Next Steps¶
Immediate (Required before testing can continue): 1. Implement pre-built Docker development image 2. Configure PyPI caching or mirror 3. Split requirements for better error isolation
Short-term (Improves reliability): 1. Add container health checks 2. Implement dependency caching in CI/CD 3. Add security scanning
Long-term (Enhances maintainability): 1. Create comprehensive test matrix 2. Implement automated reporting 3. Add performance benchmarking
