Backlinks change what you write

note-taking tools
When a note shows what points at it, you start writing for the incoming links.

A backlink list is not navigation. It is feedback.

The first time a note shows you four other notes that needed it, you learn something you could not have known while writing it: which of your ideas is load-bearing. Notes with many backlinks are the ones your thinking actually rests on, and they are usually not the ones you thought were important.

It changes the writing, too. Knowing a note will be arrived at from somewhere else, you stop writing openings. No context-setting, no “as I mentioned” — the reader came from a link that already gave them the context.

The tooling matters less than the habit, but it has to be automatic. A backlink you maintain by hand is a backlink you stop maintaining.
