Definition. The contemporary strata: irony about irony (meta), and sincerity worn after irony so long that no one can verify the switch (post).
Mechanism. Meta-irony collapses the speaker’s position — the statement is and isn’t meant, and the undecidability is the content. Post-irony travels the other direction: after decades of default detachment, plain sincerity lands as the surprising move (the New Sincerity thesis). Both depend on an audience fluent enough in layers to count them, which makes them the first forms in this vault with a literacy requirement.
Commonly confused with. Each other, constantly — which is itself the joke. The working test: meta-irony wants you unsure what is meant; post-irony wants you sure, and moved that you checked.
The patron non-saint. A 1996 single titled after irony whose scenarios are almost all merely unfortunate — making the song’s title its only, and finest, irony. A work about irony containing none is a genuine reversal of a genuine expectation: the song passes the gate its own lyrics fail. The gate is named accordingly.
