Cosmic Irony

Definition. The universe as ironist: fate arranges outcomes as if to mock human intention specifically.

Table of Contents

Definition. The universe as ironist: fate arranges outcomes as if to mock human intention specifically.

Mechanism. Also called irony of fate. The expectation is human striving; the reversal is delivered by forces indifferent or hostile to it, timed so precisely that indifference becomes indistinguishable from wit. Hardy built a career here. The self-defeating prophecy is its engineering diagram: the act taken to avoid the outcome causes the outcome (Oedipus’s parents consult the oracle; the consultation sets the machinery running).

Commonly confused with. Ordinary tragedy. Tragedy needs only loss; cosmic irony needs timing — the sense that the loss was composed, not merely permitted.

Exemplars

  • Nobel’s Obituary — fate delivering a man his own eulogy, with edits requested
