Oedipus Rex

A king launches an investigation to find his predecessor's murderer and lift the plague — the confident detective, closing in.

Table of Contents

Sophocles staged the play for an audience that already knew the myth — which means he deliberately traded away surprise to purchase something better. Every proclamation Oedipus makes (“I will hunt this man down as if for my own father”) detonates twice: once for him, once for us. This is the ur-text of Dramatic Irony irony not because it uses the device but because it is built from nothing else — the plot is simply the awareness gap closing at speaking pace.

The Cosmic Irony layer is the self-defeating prophecy: every action taken to escape the oracle — by his parents, then by Oedipus himself — is a required part in the oracle’s machinery. And the sight motif literalizes the theme with a craftsman’s cruelty: the blind prophet sees everything, the sharp-eyed king sees nothing, and when the king finally sees, he takes his eyes. The vault’s standing test for dramatic irony — does the character’s confidence power their destruction? — is just this play, generalized.
