The story as told: when Alfred’s brother Ludvig died in 1888, a French paper confused the brothers and published Alfred’s obituary — an unflattering one, remembered as calling him a dealer in death who grew rich finding faster ways to kill. Alfred, granted the rarest of gifts — a preview of his legacy with time to revise — rewrote his will in 1895 and endowed the prizes that made his surname mean the opposite of dynamite.
Why this entry is filed legend. The will, the prizes, and the reputational inversion are documented fact. The triggering clipping is not: historians and archivists have had persistent trouble producing the actual 1888 obituary, and the tale has the too-perfect symmetry that should raise any curator’s hand toward the compost lever. It stays in canon as a documented legend — an irony about a man whose motivating irony may itself be manufactured, which is arguably a third layer. This entry is the vault’s standing exhibit for the veracity field: the better the story, the harder it must be checked.
