September

The Great Pie Mix-Up

September brought golden fields, crisp apples, and the smell of fresh-baked pies.

September brought golden fields, crisp apples, and the smell of fresh-baked pies. It was time for the Dusty Gulch County Fair!

The pie contest was the grandest event of all. A long table held a dozen beautiful pies, each with a little name card: Grandma Myrna’s peach, Old Walt’s pumpkin, Tahra’s cherry, Amr’s apple, and more.

“I’m entering Hans in the Best Dog contest,” said Deputy Dodge proudly. “And I’m entering Nubi in the Cleverest Pet contest,” said Ranger Reena.

But just before judging — DISASTER! Hans spotted a hot-dog stand and zoomed under the pie table! It wobbled, and every single name card went flutter-flutter-flutter into one big jumbled pile on the ground.

Hans bursts from under the pie table as every name card flutters into a jumbled pile at the county fair

“Oh no,” gasped Tahra. “Now nobody knows whose pie is whose — and judging starts any minute!”

“A mix-up mystery,” said Reena. “But I know exactly who can solve it.” She turned to Hans. “Use your nose, boy!”

Hans took a giant sniff of the first pie — SNUFFLE — then trotted straight to Old Walt and woofed. “That IS my pumpkin pie!” said Walt. Correct!

One by one, Hans matched each pie to its baker: peach to Grandma Myrna, cherry to Tahra, apple to Amr. Snuffle, woof, snuffle, woof.

But then he reached two pies that smelled almost exactly the same — both berry, both purple, both sweet. Hans sniffed one. Sniffed the other. Sniffed again, and looked confused.

“They’re too alike!” said Dodge. “Now what?”

Reena leaned in close and spotted the tiniest clue. “Wait — this one has a little braided crust, and that one has a smooth crust. Ashley always braids hers!” Mystery within a mystery, solved.

And one final card was missing altogether — until Nubi pawed at Hans’s furry tail, where the last name card was stuck the whole time! Everyone roared with laughter.

When every pie was matched at last, the judges gave Hans a brand-new blue ribbon: “Best Nose at the Fair.” And Nubi won his own contest, for being the quickest, cleverest cat around.

Hans proudly wears his blue “Best Nose at the Fair” ribbon, surrounded by happy bakers holding their pies

“We BOTH won!” cheered Dodge, hugging his good (and slightly sticky) dog.

That evening, the friends shared warm slices of every pie at once, watching the sun set gold over the fairgrounds.

“Best fair ever,” said Reena.

“Even with the great pie pile-up,” laughed Dodge.

The End

How the illustrations in this story were made

Setup — Pies, Ribbons, and One Runaway Dog!

Cozy illustration storybook: the golden County Fair, a long table of a dozen autumn pies with little name cards; Deputy Dodge (young blonde cowboy, blue eyes, tan hat, red bandana, denim shirt, gold star badge) proud beside Thunderpaws Hans (giant light brown lab, caramel back, white belly, pointy ears); Ranger Reena (light-brown skin, brown eyes, dark curly pigtails, olive flat-brim hat, green shirt, olive vest, pink accents) holds up Nubi (sandy-orange tabby, cream belly and paws, curly tail); Hans zooms under the table chasing a hot-dog smell and all the name cards flutter into the air; Tahra (young woman, olive skin, long dark wavy hair with a bright ribbon, teal-accented vest) gasps. Playful autumn chaos. Kid-friendly, never dark.

Mystery — Two Look-Alike Pies and a Card in the Tail not yet generated

Cozy illustration storybook: name cards jumbled on the ground; Thunderpaws Hans (giant light brown lab, caramel back, white belly, pointy ears) sniff-matches pies but looks adorably confused between two look-alike purple berry pies; Ranger Reena (light-brown skin, brown eyes, dark curly pigtails, olive flat-brim hat, green shirt, olive vest, pink accents) spots that one has a braided crust (Ashley's); Nubi (sandy-orange tabby, cream belly and paws, curly tail) paws the last missing name card free from Hans's plume tail; Deputy Dodge (young blonde cowboy, blue eyes, tan hat, red bandana, denim shirt, gold star badge) leans in delighted. Cozy, gentle laughs. Kid-friendly, never dark.

Resolution — We Both Won! Best Nose at the Fair

Cozy illustration storybook: Thunderpaws Hans (giant light brown lab, caramel back, white belly, pointy ears) wears a blue "Best Nose at the Fair" ribbon (a little sticky); Nubi (sandy-orange tabby, cream belly and paws, curly tail) wears a winner's ribbon; Deputy Dodge (young blonde cowboy, blue eyes, tan hat, red bandana, denim shirt, gold star badge) hugs Hans "we both won!"; Ranger Reena (light-brown skin, brown eyes, dark curly pigtails, olive flat-brim hat, green shirt, olive vest, pink accents) laughs; bakers Grandma Myrna (peach), Old Walt (pumpkin), Tahra (cherry), and Amr (apple) stand happily with their matched pies; golden sunset over the fairgrounds. Kid-friendly, never dark.
