The Secret Cool Breeze
It was the hottest day Dusty Gulch had ever seen.
It was the hottest day Dusty Gulch had ever seen. Even the cacti looked like they were sweating.
“I’m melting,” groaned Deputy Dodge, flat on his back, fanning himself with his hat.
“Me too,” sighed Ranger Reena. Hans’s tongue hung nearly to the ground, and Nubi refused to budge from the coolest corner of the porch.
Then Reena sat bolt upright. “Wait. Did you feel that?”
A puff of cool air drifted by — soft and chilly, like a breath from a giant ice cube. Then it was gone.
“That’s impossible,” said Dodge. “There’s no wind today. Not a single breeze. So where did cold air come from?”
“That,” said Reena, eyes sparkling, “is our mystery.”
But cool air is invisible, so they needed a way to see it. Reena had an idea. She held up a tiny feather and let go — and instead of falling straight down, the feather drifted sideways, tugged along by the secret breeze.
“The feather will show us the way!” said Dodge.
They followed the floating feather out of town, past the dry creek, toward the big red rocks. The closer they got, the cooler the air, and the more clues appeared: green moss growing where the desert should be dry, and little water droplets on the cool stone.
Behind a boulder, hidden by a bush, was a small dark opening in the rock — and out of it whooshed lovely, cold cave air.
“A secret cave!” gasped Dodge. “That’s where the cool breeze has been hiding!”
Hans bounded forward to lead the way — and got his big self wedged tight in the entrance. “Woof?” He wiggled. He squirmed. POP! — out he came, and everyone tumbled over laughing.
The cave was dark inside, and nobody knew what might be hiding in the shadows. But Deputy Dodge lifted the lantern high. “I’ll go first,” he said bravely, and stepped into the dark.
Inside, the cave was cool and shady, its walls glittering with tiny crystals like a sky full of stars. A deep, cold spring trickled in the dark — that was the source of the magic breeze.
The friends raced back to share their discovery, and soon the whole town was tucked inside the secret cave, sipping cold lemonade and telling stories while the sun blazed away outside.
“Hottest day ever,” said Dodge, happily shivering.
“But the best kind of hot,” said Reena, “when you and your best friend find a secret to share with the whole town.”
