October
The Glowing Canyon
Orange and gold leaves swirled through Dusty Gulch as October arrived — and with it, a spooky whisper.
Orange and gold leaves swirled through Dusty Gulch as October arrived — and with it, a spooky whisper. Out in the old canyon, strange lights were glowing at night, and a ghostly “whoooo” echoed off the walls. Folks were too scared to go near.
“Everybody says it’s haunted,” said Ranger Reena, eyes wide.
“Then it’s up to us to find the truth,” said Deputy Dodge, grinning under his pumpkin hat.
That evening the friends pulled on their costumes — Dodge a skeleton cowboy, Reena a friendly witch, Nubi in a tiny cape, Hans in floppy felt bat wings. Ashley, Amr, and Tahra came along too, lanterns swinging.
The canyon walls glowed faintly orange, and the eerie sound floated up: “Whoooo… whoooo…”
“D-did you hear that?” whispered Dodge, scooting closer to Reena. “I heard it,” she whispered, scooting closer too.
For just a moment, even brave Deputy Dodge felt a shiver run down his back. But then he took a deep breath and stood up tall. “A real deputy is brave even when he’s scared,” he said. “Come on — let’s find out what’s really out there.”
With Dodge leading the way and Hans at his side, the friends crept around a bend and found — not a ghost, but an old iron lantern, swinging gently from a tree branch, its candle still flickering.
“Someone lit this,” said Reena, puzzled. “But who? And why out here?”
That was the deeper mystery. They searched and found more lanterns — one on a rock, one by the dry creek, one at the canyon’s mouth — each one lit, forming a path.
“They make a trail!” realized Dodge. “Like a string of breadcrumbs in the dark.”
Following the lanterns, the friends found a cozy little camp where an old prospector sat warming his hands and cooking biscuits. “Evening, young’uns!” he chuckled. “I light these lanterns every autumn so travelers don’t lose their way in the dark canyon. Didn’t mean to spook anybody!”
And the ghostly “whoooo”? Up in a hollow log perched a family of round, sleepy owls, hooting at the moon. One swooped down and landed — plop — right on Hans’s bat wings, as if he were a perch. Everyone burst out laughing.
“Mystery solved!” announced Dodge. “Not a haunting — just a kind old man and some sleepy owls.”
The friends shared their candy with the prospector, and Hans gobbled three biscuits (immediately), while Nubi pounced at every drifting leaf.
“Best Halloween ever,” said Reena, linking arms with Dodge beneath the harvest moon.
And from then on, the glowing canyon wasn’t scary at all — just the friendliest, best-lit trail in all of Dusty Gulch.
