November
The Secret Helper
November turned chilly, and Dusty Gulch began cooking for the biggest feast of the year.
November turned chilly, and Dusty Gulch began cooking for the biggest feast of the year. But that’s when a gentle mystery began.
One frosty morning, Grandma Myrna found a basket of apples on her doorstep. The next day, Old Walt discovered a neat stack of firewood by his gate. Then Ashley woke to warm muffins steaming on her windowsill — and Amr found his fence quietly mended.
Nobody knew who was doing it.
“A kindness mystery,” said Ranger Reena. “Somebody’s secretly helping the whole town. But who — and why hide it?”
“Let’s find out,” said Deputy Dodge, “so we can finally say thank you.”
This helper was careful, though, and clever about staying hidden. The first morning, the friends watched Grandma Myrna’s porch — but fell fast asleep, and woke to find a fresh basket already there! They’d missed the helper completely.
So they looked for clues instead. Reena studied the gifts. “The apples are the small, sweet kind that only grow up on the north ridge. And these muffins use cinnamon — the same cinnamon Chef Pierre sells. Whoever it is shops in town but lives up the ridge.”
The next morning, before the sun was even up, the friends hid extra-quietly near the ridge path. Hans stayed awake this time, ears alert. And then — tiptoe, tiptoe — a small figure appeared, set down a basket of pears, and turned to slip away.
“Wait — please!” called Reena gently.
The figure froze. It was a girl about their age, with shy eyes and rosy cheeks — Alex, whose family had just moved to the ridge from Italy.
“I’m sorry!” she whispered. “When we arrived, everyone in Dusty Gulch was so kind to us. I wanted to say thank you… but I was too shy to say it out loud. So I left presents instead.”
The friends’ hearts melted right there in the frost.
“You don’t have to be shy with us,” said Dodge warmly. “Come to the feast — you’re part of Dusty Gulch now.”
That evening, the whole town gathered around long tables piled with food, and the once-shy newcomer sat right in the middle, laughing with her brand-new friends.
When the mayor asked everyone what they were thankful for, Dodge didn’t even have to think. “I’m thankful for my best friend Reena, for Hans and Nubi, and for new friends — because a town only grows warmer when it grows bigger.”
Reena squeezed his hand. “Same here. Always.”
And Dusty Gulch feasted long into the cozy night, fuller and kinder than ever before.
