December
The Star That Wouldn't Shine
Snow fell softly over Dusty Gulch, covering Main Street in a blanket of white.
Snow fell softly over Dusty Gulch, covering Main Street in a blanket of white. Lanterns glowed in every window, and excitement filled the frosty air.
Every December, the town raised a great golden star to the top of the tall barn and lit it up, so bright that families all across the valley could see it shine. It was the most magical moment of the whole year.
But this year, when the mayor flipped the switch — nothing. The star stayed dark and cold.
“Oh dear,” fretted the mayor. “It’s almost time, and the star won’t shine!”
“A mystery, right before the holidays,” said Deputy Dodge. “We’re on the case!”
Now, a dark star could mean lots of things, so the friends checked each one like proper detectives.
“Maybe the switch is broken,” said Reena. They tested it. Click-click. The switch worked fine.
“Maybe a bulb burned out,” said Dodge. They checked the bulbs. Every one was good.
“Maybe ice is covering it,” said Reena. But the star was dry as a bone.
“Then there’s only one way to know for sure,” said Reena. “Someone has to climb all the way up and look inside the star itself.”
The ladder was tall, and icy, and wobbly, and the barn roof was very, very high. Everyone looked up and gulped. But Deputy Dodge rolled up his sleeves. “I’ll climb,” he said bravely. “A deputy isn’t afraid of a little height.”
Up he went, careful in the snow, with Nubi tucked snug in his coat and Reena holding the bottom rung tight and calling up advice. At the very top, Dodge leaned close to the big golden star and peeked inside…
…and there, nestled snug among the wires, was a tiny bird, fast asleep on a cozy little nest! She had built her home right inside the warm star — and her soft nest was gently blocking the lights.
“Aww,” whispered Dodge. “She wasn’t breaking it. She was just trying to stay warm in the cold,” as he carefully brought the star down.
Very, very gently, the friends lifted the whole nest — bird and all — and moved it into a snug wooden birdhouse, lined with straw and tucked safe beneath the warm barn eaves. The little bird gave a grateful cheep.
Then the mayor flipped the switch one more time.
The star blazed to life — bright and golden against the deep blue sky, shining all the way across the snowy valley.
The whole town cheered. Warm cider went round, Chef Pierre passed slices of a special log-shaped cake, and snow drifted down soft and slow.
“That was the bravest climb I’ve ever seen,” said Reena.
Dodge grinned and wrapped an arm around her shoulders. “And it took your clever thinking to know where to look. Best night of the whole year.”
“Because we solved it together,” said Reena, “just like always.”
Hans woofed. Nubi purred. And nearby, one little bird slept warm in her new home — while the Christmas star shone over Dusty Gulch and a whole year of adventures, one cozy month at a time.
The End
How the illustrations in this story were made
Setup — The Star Stays Dark
Cozy illustration storybook: a snowy December evening, lantern-lit Main Street under white; the town gathers below the tall barn where a great golden star was just raised; the Mayor (jovial portly man, mustache, bowler hat, ribbon of office) flips a switch but the star stays dark and cold against deep-blue twilight; Deputy Dodge (young blonde cowboy, blue eyes, tan hat, red bandana, denim shirt, gold star badge) and Ranger Reena (light-brown skin, brown eyes, dark curly pigtails, olive flat-brim hat, green shirt, olive vest, pink accents) look up, ready to take the case; Thunderpaws Hans (giant light brown lab, caramel back, white belly, pointy ears) beside them, Nubi (sandy-orange tabby, cream belly and paws, curly tail) on her hat; snow drifting. Kid-friendly, never dark.
Mystery — The Climb to Peek Inside not yet generated
Cozy illustration storybook: Deputy Dodge (young blonde cowboy, blue eyes, tan hat, red bandana, denim shirt, gold star badge) bravely climbs a tall icy wooden ladder toward the barn roof to peek inside the big golden star at its peak, Nubi (sandy-orange tabby, cream belly and paws, curly tail) tucked snug in his coat; Ranger Reena (light-brown skin, brown eyes, dark curly pigtails, olive flat-brim hat, green shirt, olive vest, pink accents) holds the bottom rung and calls advice; Thunderpaws Hans (giant light brown lab, caramel back, white belly, pointy ears) watches from the base; snowy night, high but cozy and safe. Kid-friendly, never dark.
Resolution — A Warm Home and a Shining Star
Cozy illustration storybook: solved — a tiny mother bird had nested inside the star; the friends gently settle the nest into a straw-lined birdhouse under the barn eaves (a grateful cheep); the Mayor (jovial portly man, mustache, bowler hat, ribbon of office) flips the switch and the great golden star blazes over the snowy valley; Deputy Dodge (young blonde cowboy, blue eyes, tan hat, red bandana, denim shirt, gold star badge) and Ranger Reena (light-brown skin, brown eyes, dark curly pigtails, olive flat-brim hat, green shirt, olive vest, pink accents) cheer with the town; Chef Pierre (French chef, no mustache, white toque, blue crepe cart) passes slices of log-shaped cake; snow drifting soft. Kid-friendly, never dark.
