May

The Masked Marauder

May arrived with warm sunshine and fields of wildflowers, and the whole town gathered for the May Day Hoedown.

May arrived with warm sunshine and fields of wildflowers, and the whole town gathered for the May Day Hoedown. A tall ribbon-pole stood in the square, and the snack table groaned with cornbread, berry muffins, and Chef Pierre’s famous blueberry pie.

But there was trouble. Last year, a sneaky snack thief had robbed the whole table — and this year, the town was determined to catch it.

“My cornbread’s already gone!” hollered Old Walt.

“And a muffin!” cried Ashley.

Everyone turned to look at Hans. Hans sat up very straight and looked deeply offended. “Woof!” (He hadn’t touched a single crumb.)

“This is the work of the Masked Marauder,” said Deputy Dodge gravely. “And this year, we catch him.”

Reena studied the table for clues. “Look — the snack box latch is open, but it wasn’t broken. Whoever did this knows how to open it. That’s one clever bandit.”

So the friends set a trap. They latched the box tight and hid behind a hay bale to watch. Sure enough — sneak, sneak, sneak — a furry face appeared, with a black mask of fur right across its eyes. A raccoon! With nimble little fingers, it flipped the latch click and reached inside.

“There he is!” cried Dodge — and the chase was ON! Around the ribbon-pole, through the dancers, over a barrel — yeeha! — Hans bounding, Nubi zipping, the raccoon scampering up a post with a muffin in its paws.

But Reena didn’t chase. She thought. “He’s not bad,” she said. “He’s just hungry and clever. Chasing him will only make him sneakier. We need to outsmart him with kindness.”

So the friends built the Masked Marauder his very own snack box — one with a tricky little puzzle door that opened just for him, set at the far edge of the square, filled with treats.

The clever raccoon figured out the puzzle in no time, click-click, and happily munched his own muffin — leaving the town’s table alone at last.

“You didn’t catch the bandit,” said Old Walt, amazed. “You trained him!”

With the mystery solved, everyone grabbed a ribbon and danced around the pole, weaving a rainbow. Dodge held yellow, Reena held pink, and they spun until they were dizzy and laughing.

“Best May Day ever,” puffed Dodge.

“Because the cleverest thief in Dusty Gulch is finally on our side,” said Reena.

The End

How the illustrations in this story were made

Setup — The Snack Thief Strikes not yet generated

Cozy illustration storybook: a sunny May Day Hoedown with a tall ribbon-pole and a snack table of cornbread, muffins, and blueberry pie; Old Walt (old rancher, grey mustache, wide-brim hat, plaid shirt) and Ashley (artistic young woman, blonde braid, pink gingham dress, sun bonnet) cry out about missing snacks; Thunderpaws Hans (giant light brown lab, caramel back, white belly, pointy ears) sits up looking offended ("not me!"); Deputy Dodge (young blonde cowboy, blue eyes, tan hat, red bandana, denim shirt, gold star badge) declares a "Masked Marauder"; Ranger Reena (light-brown skin, brown eyes, dark curly pigtails, olive flat-brim hat, green shirt, olive vest, pink accents) studies the table, Nubi (sandy-orange tabby, cream belly and paws, curly tail) on her hat; wildflowers. Kid-friendly, never dark.

Mystery — The Latch Clicks Open

Cozy illustration storybook: Deputy Dodge (young blonde cowboy, blue eyes, tan hat, red bandana, denim shirt, gold star badge) and Ranger Reena (light-brown skin, brown eyes, dark curly pigtails, olive flat-brim hat, green shirt, olive vest, pink accents) peek over a hay bale with Nubi (sandy-orange tabby, cream belly and paws, curly tail) and Thunderpaws Hans (giant light brown lab, caramel back, white belly, pointy ears); a masked raccoon (black eye-mask, ringed tail) flips the snack-box latch with nimble fingers and reaches for a muffin. Sunny, thrilling but cozy reveal. Kid-friendly, never dark.

Resolution — The Marauder's Own Puzzle Box

Cozy illustration storybook: the friends have built the masked raccoon (black eye-mask, ringed tail) his own little puzzle-door snack box at the edge of the square, and he munches his own muffin happily; behind them the whole town dances around the ribbon-pole weaving a rainbow of ribbons, Deputy Dodge (young blonde cowboy, blue eyes, tan hat, red bandana, denim shirt, gold star badge) holding yellow and Ranger Reena (light-brown skin, brown eyes, dark curly pigtails, olive flat-brim hat, green shirt, olive vest, pink accents) holding pink; Old Walt (old rancher, grey mustache, wide-brim hat, plaid shirt) marvels nearby. Sunny and joyful. Kid-friendly, never dark.
