The Midnight Singers
Rain pitter-pattered on Dusty Gulch all day long, and by nightfall a brand-new puddle-pond had filled up at the edge of town.
Rain pitter-pattered on Dusty Gulch all day long, and by nightfall a brand-new puddle-pond had filled up at the edge of town.
That night, nobody could sleep. A strange, wild chorus drifted through the dark:
“Rib-bit! CHIRP! Rib-bit! CHIRP-CHIRP!”
“What on earth is that?” yawned Deputy Dodge the next morning, rubbing his eyes.
“It only sings at night,” said Ranger Reena, “and it’s coming from somewhere near the new pond. Time to be detectives.”
But this mystery was a tricky one, because the sound seemed to come from everywhere at once. So the friends did what good detectives do — they ruled out suspects one by one.
“Could it be the old gate squeaking?” asked Dodge. They oiled the gate. That night — “Rib-bit! CHIRP!” — still singing. Not the gate.
“Could it be Grandma Myrna’s rocking chair?” They checked. Grandma Myrna had been fast asleep. Not the chair.
“Could it be a hurt animal?” That worried them most of all. So when the sun went down, they crept toward the pond with a lantern to find out for certain.
Hans’s ears stood straight up. Nubi froze with one paw in the air. Reena lifted the lantern high — and the whole pond came alive!
Dozens of plump little toads sat in the shallow water, puffing out their throats like tiny balloons and singing to the moon.
“Spadefoot toads!” said Reena, delighted. “Amr told me about these. They sleep buried deep underground for months and months — sometimes a whole year! — and only dig up to sing and splash after a big rain.”
“So they waited months and months underground,” said Dodge, “just for tonight?”
One little toad hopped onto Hans’s nose. “Rib-bit!” Hans crossed his eyes trying to look at it, and everyone burst out laughing.
The next night, instead of grumbling, the whole town carried blankets down to the pond. They lay back and listened to the toad choir sing beneath the stars — the strangest, sweetest concert Dusty Gulch had ever heard.
And by morning, the desert had bloomed: tiny pink and yellow flowers crowned every cactus, woken by the very same rain.
“Rain brings the best surprises,” said Reena.
Dodge grinned and added a soft little “rib-bit” of his own.
The End
How the illustrations in this story were made
Setup — The Strange Midnight Chorus not yet generated
Cozy illustration storybook: the dewy morning after a spring rain, a new puddle-pond glinting at the edge of town; a sleepy Deputy Dodge (young blonde cowboy, blue eyes, tan hat, red bandana, denim shirt, gold star badge) yawns and rubs an eye on the boardwalk; Ranger Reena (light-brown skin, brown eyes, dark curly pigtails, olive flat-brim hat, green shirt, olive vest, pink accents) points toward the pond, detective-ready; Thunderpaws Hans (giant light brown lab, caramel back, white belly, pointy ears) yawns; Nubi (sandy-orange tabby, cream belly and paws, curly tail) alert on her hat; fresh puddles everywhere. Kid-friendly, never dark.
