The Slowest Suspect

Summer arrived hot and golden, and it was the day of the Great Watermelon Race!

Summer arrived hot and golden, and it was the day of the Great Watermelon Race! Everyone would roll a giant watermelon down Main Street using only their nose.

But when the sheriff lined up the melons that morning, he gasped. “Hold everything! Every melon has a bite out of it — but only the ripest ones!”

It was true. The plain melons sat untouched. But each of the sweetest, reddest, most perfect watermelons had one tidy little chomp taken right out of it.

“Now that’s a strange clue,” said Deputy Dodge. “Our nibbler doesn’t just grab any old melon. It picks the best ones every time.”

“So it’s a melon expert,” said Reena. “Someone who knows how to find the ripe ones. But who?”

They hunted for tracks. There were no hops like a rabbit, no paw prints like a coyote. Instead, in the dust, they found a strange wide groove — a long, smooth trail, as if something heavy had dragged itself slowly along.

“Whatever it is,” said Reena, puzzled, “it moves slowly. Very, very slowly.”

The sheriff points at the row of nibbled watermelons while Reena traces the strange slow drag-track in the dust

They followed the slow groove behind the melon wagon, around a barrel, under a shady bush… and there, taking the tiniest, most thoughtful bite out of the ripest melon of all, was an old desert tortoise.

Chomp. He chewed. He swallowed. He looked up at them with calm, sleepy eyes, in absolutely no hurry at all.

The old desert tortoise calmly munches the ripest watermelon under the race banner as the friends watch, amazed

“A tortoise!” laughed Dodge. “The slowest critter in the whole desert is our melon thief!”

“And the smartest melon-picker, too,” said Reena. “He can tell the ripe ones by smell. Maybe he can teach us.”

So the friends gave the wise old tortoise a melon of his very own, and watched which one he chose — the ripest, juiciest melon in the patch. From then on, whenever the town wanted to know if a melon was ready, they simply asked the tortoise.

Then — “Ready… set… GO!” — the race was on! Boop, boop, boop went Dodge’s nose. Boop, boop, boop went Reena’s. They rolled neck and neck and crossed the line at the very same moment — THUD!

“A tie!” cried the sheriff.

Dodge and Reena just laughed and split the biggest, ripest slice — picked, of course, by the slowest suspect in Dusty Gulch.

The End

How the illustrations in this story were made

Setup — A Bite Out of the Best Melon!

Cozy illustration storybook: a hot golden morning of the Great Watermelon Race, a row of giant melons lined down Main Street; the Sheriff (older lawman, grey mustache, big silver star badge, tall hat) gasps and points because every ripest melon has one tidy chomp out of it; Deputy Dodge (young blonde cowboy, blue eyes, tan hat, red bandana, denim shirt, gold star badge) crouches curiously over a bitten melon; Ranger Reena (light-brown skin, brown eyes, dark curly pigtails, olive flat-brim hat, green shirt, olive vest, pink accents) studies the neat bite mark like a detective. Sunny summer street. Kid-friendly, never dark.

Mystery — Follow the Slow, Slow Trail not yet generated

Cozy illustration storybook: no rabbit or coyote tracks — just a wide, smooth, slow groove dragged through the dust, winding behind a melon wagon and a barrel toward a shady bush; Ranger Reena (light-brown skin, brown eyes, dark curly pigtails, olive flat-brim hat, green shirt, olive vest, pink accents) crouches tracing the mysterious groove with one finger; Deputy Dodge (young blonde cowboy, blue eyes, tan hat, red bandana, denim shirt, gold star badge) peers eagerly ahead. Warm midday, curious and cozy. Kid-friendly, never dark.

Resolution — The Slowest Suspect Picks the Ripest

Cozy illustration storybook: under a shady bush a wise old desert tortoise (domed patterned shell, wrinkled face, sleepy eyes) takes a tiny bite of the ripest juicy melon of his own; Deputy Dodge (young blonde cowboy, blue eyes, tan hat, red bandana, denim shirt, gold star badge) laughs with delight; Ranger Reena (light-brown skin, brown eyes, dark curly pigtails, olive flat-brim hat, green shirt, olive vest, pink accents) smiles warmly; the watermelon race begins down the sunny street behind them. Golden afternoon, heartwarming. Kid-friendly, never dark.
