The Mystery Booms

The Fourth of July was the biggest night of the year in Dusty Gulch — and it was extra special, because the Fourth of July was also Deputy Dodge's birthday!

The Fourth of July was the biggest night of the year in Dusty Gulch — and it was extra special, because the Fourth of July was also Deputy Dodge’s birthday! Lanterns crisscrossed Main Street, everyone wore their best red, white, and blue, and Reena and the friends had a secret surprise up their sleeves.

But all afternoon, a frightening sound kept rolling through town:

BOOM! POP! BOOM-POP-POP!

Everyone jumped. Tumbleweed Nubi puffed up like a furry pinecone and dove under the porch.

“The fireworks don’t start until dark,” said Ranger Reena. “So what’s making all that noise now?”

“Could be trouble,” said Deputy Dodge. “Let’s track it down before folks get scared.”

This mystery took some real detective work, because booms can come from lots of places.

“Is it a thunderstorm?” Dodge looked up. The sky was clear blue. Not thunder.

“Is it blasting at the old mine?” They asked the miners. The mine was closed for the holiday. Not the mine.

One by one, the friends crossed off every suspect. Then Hans lifted his nose, sniffed the warm air, and smelled something delicious. He tugged them across the square — POP! POP-POP! — straight to Chef Pierre’s stand, where a great iron pot sat baking in the blazing sun, its lid rattling like crazy.

Dodge bravely lifted the lid… and out fluffed a cloud of warm, white POPCORN! The summer sun had grown so hot it popped the corn kernels all by itself!

Chef Pierre lifts the lid of the great iron pot and warm popcorn fluffs out, solving the mystery booms

“It’s POPCORN!” howled Dodge, laughing so hard he sat right down. “Our scary booms were snacks the whole time!”

Even Nubi crept out to sniff a fluffy piece.

That night, the whole town shared big bowls of Pierre’s sunshine popcorn. And when the real fireworks finally bloomed — BOOM! Red sparkles! WHOOSH! Gold and blue! — Nubi got frightened all over again.

So Deputy Dodge — wrapped his soft bandana gently over Nubi’s ears, and Reena held him close on a quiet hill above town, far enough away that the booms felt cozy instead of scary.

Nubi even peeked out, watching the colors dance.

Then Reena gave a little whistle — the secret signal. The whole town turned toward the hill, and the brightest firework of all burst overhead in shimmering golden letters: HAPPY BIRTHDAY, DODGE!

“SURPRISE!” cheered Ashley, Amr, and Tahra, as Chef Pierre came puffing up the hill carrying a towering birthday cake topped with sparklers.

Fireworks bloom over Dusty Gulch as Dodge wraps his bandana over Nubi's ears and Chef Pierre arrives with the sparkler birthday cake

Dodge’s mouth dropped open. “You did all this… for me?”

“Of course,” said Reena, grinning. “The bravest deputy in the West only turns a year braver once a year!”

They sang and laughed, and the four friends munched cake and popcorn under a sky full of sparkles — the very best birthday, in the very best seats, in all of Dusty Gulch.

The End

How the illustrations in this story were made

Setup — What Was That BOOM? not yet generated

Cozy illustration storybook: a bright Fourth-of-July afternoon (also Dodge's birthday), Main Street strung with paper lanterns and red-white-blue bunting; a mysterious BOOM-POP rolls through and everyone jumps; Deputy Dodge (young blonde cowboy, blue eyes, tan hat, red bandana, denim shirt, gold star badge) cups a hand to his ear, brave and curious; Ranger Reena (light-brown skin, brown eyes, dark curly pigtails, olive flat-brim hat, green shirt, olive vest, pink accents) listens hard; Thunderpaws Hans (giant light brown lab, caramel back, white belly, pointy ears) alert; Nubi (sandy-orange tabby, cream belly and paws, curly tail) puffed up like a pinecone, only his tail and wide eyes peeking from under the boardwalk. Kid-friendly, never dark.

Mystery — Follow That Delicious Smell!

Cozy illustration storybook: Thunderpaws Hans (giant light brown lab, caramel back, white belly, pointy ears) catches a delicious smell and tugs everyone to Chef Pierre's blue crepe cart (French chef, no mustache, white toque, tricolor neckerchief), where a big black iron pot rattles POP-POP in the blazing sun; Deputy Dodge (young blonde cowboy, blue eyes, tan hat, red bandana, denim shirt, gold star badge) reaches a curious hand toward the lid; Ranger Reena (light-brown skin, brown eyes, dark curly pigtails, olive flat-brim hat, green shirt, olive vest, pink accents) points excitedly; Nubi (sandy-orange tabby, cream belly and paws, curly tail) still peeks from under the boardwalk. Sunny, funny. Kid-friendly, never dark.

Resolution — Happy Birthday, Dodge!

Cozy illustration storybook: night on a grassy hill safe above the fireworks; Deputy Dodge (young blonde cowboy, blue eyes, tan hat, red bandana, denim shirt, gold star badge) gently wraps his red bandana over Nubi's ears (sandy-orange tabby, cream belly and paws, curly tail) while Ranger Reena (light-brown skin, brown eyes, dark curly pigtails, olive flat-brim hat, green shirt, olive vest, pink accents) holds the cat close; Thunderpaws Hans (giant light brown lab, caramel back, white belly, pointy ears) beside a big popcorn bowl; overhead a golden firework spells "HAPPY BIRTHDAY, DODGE"; Chef Pierre (French chef, no mustache, white toque) carries a sparkler cake; Ashley, Amr, and Tahra cheer. Warm, starry. Kid-friendly, never dark.
