The Case of the Missing Shinies

Everyone in Dusty Gulch knew that Ranger Reena loved shiny things.

Everyone in Dusty Gulch knew that Ranger Reena loved shiny things. She kept a whole collection in a little tin box: bottle caps, smooth marbles, a silver coin, and her greatest treasure of all — a sparkly star-shaped pin.

So when she opened her tin box one morning and found it half-empty, she let out a yelp. “My shinies! Somebody’s been taking them!”

She wasn’t the only one. Grandma Myrna’s silver spoon was gone. Amr’s brass button had vanished. All week, shiny things disappeared from all over town — but only during the night.

“A nighttime thief,” said Deputy Dodge, narrowing his eyes. “We’ll have to be clever to catch this one.”

The first night, they left a shiny coin on the porch and watched from the window. But they blinked, and poof — by morning the coin was gone, and they’d missed the culprit completely!

“Too sneaky,” frowned Reena. “We need a better plan.”

The second night, Reena set the coin in the open moonlight, right in the middle of the porch where they could see it. The friends hid behind a barrel, holding very, very still. An owl hooted. The moon rose high. And then — tap-tap-tap — little feet came scampering.

A small, fuzzy critter with a long tail crept up to the coin, sniffed it, picked it up in its tiny paws — and set a smooth gray pebble down in its place before scurrying off.

From behind a barrel in the moonlight, the friends watch the little trader rat swap a smooth pebble for the shiny coin

“A trader rat!” whispered Reena, amazed. “He doesn’t steal — he trades! A pebble for every shiny!”

They followed the little rat across the yard, under the porch, down into a snug burrow. Inside lay a glittering nest of buttons, spoons, and bottle caps — and gleaming on the very top, Reena’s star-shaped pin.

Reena laughed out loud. “He loves shiny things as much as I do. How can I be cross with that?”

Gently, the friends gathered everyone’s treasures. But Reena, who understood the little collector better than anyone, left him a gift: three sparkly buttons, all his own.

The trader rat squeaked and did a happy spin.

Reena leaves three sparkly buttons at the trader rat's burrow, which overflows with spoons, caps, and shiny treasures

And from then on, the two collectors had a deal. Some mornings Reena finds a smooth gray pebble waiting on her porch — and she always leaves a shiny button in return. One shiny-lover to another.
