Deployment Summary

Date: November 1, 2025

Changes Made

1. Environment Variable Abstraction

All hardcoded configuration values have been extracted from the Docker and ClickHouse configuration files into environment variables.

Files Created:

  • .env - Contains all environment variables with current values
  • .env.example - Template file with default values for reference
  • .gitignore - Prevents .env and data directories from being committed
  • README.md - Comprehensive documentation

Files Modified:

  • docker-compose.yml - Updated to use environment variables instead of hardcoded values

Configuration Categories:

  1. Database (PostgreSQL)
  2. ClickHouse (Analytics database)
  3. Redis (Caching)
  4. Kafka & Zookeeper (Event streaming)
  5. PostHog Application (Web, worker, plugins)
  6. Encryption (Plugin server keys)

2. Deployment Testing

The deployment was successfully tested with the following results:

All Services Running:

✅ PostgreSQL (db) - Up and running ✅ Redis - Up and running ✅ ClickHouse - Up and running ✅ Zookeeper - Up and running ✅ Kafka - Up and running ✅ PostHog Worker - Up and running ✅ PostHog Web - Up and running (accessible on port 8080) ✅ PostHog Plugins - Up and running

Web Service Status:

  • URL: http://localhost:8080
  • HTTP Status: 302 (Redirect to /preflight - Expected)
  • Response: Server is fully operational

Database Migrations:

  • All PostgreSQL migrations completed successfully
  • ClickHouse initialized properly
  • Redis connected successfully
  • Kafka topics created

3. Security Improvements

Encryption Keys:

  • Generated new base64url encoded 32-byte encryption keys
  • Fixed plugin server encryption key format issues
  • Separated encryption keys from salt keys

Secrets Management:

  • All sensitive values now in .env file
  • .env file excluded from version control via .gitignore
  • .env.example provided as a safe template

4. Configuration Validation

The deployment was validated using:

docker-compose config # Validated environment variable substitution
docker-compose ps # Confirmed all services running
curl http://localhost:8080 # Verified web service accessibility

Environment Variables Summary

Total variables configured: 32

Categories:

  • Database: 4 variables
  • ClickHouse: 6 variables
  • Redis: 2 variables
  • Kafka: 7 variables
  • Zookeeper: 2 variables
  • PostHog App: 7 variables
  • Encryption: 2 variables
  • Server Config: 2 variables

Benefits of This Setup

  1. Easy Configuration Management: All settings in one place
  2. Environment Separation: Easy to maintain dev, staging, prod configs
  3. Security: Sensitive data not committed to version control
  4. Portability: Easy to deploy across different environments
  5. Documentation: Clear README with usage instructions
  6. Validation: Can validate configuration before deployment

Next Steps (Recommendations)

For Development:

  1. Review .env values for your needs
  2. Consider reducing resource limits for local testing
  3. Enable debug logging if needed

For Production:

  1. Generate new secure secrets:
  2. SECRET_KEY (Django)
  3. ENCRYPTION_KEYS
  4. ENCRYPTION_SALT_KEYS
  5. All passwords

  6. Update security settings:

  7. Set CLICKHOUSE_SECURE=true
  8. Set CLICKHOUSE_VERIFY=true
  9. Configure proper SSL/TLS

  10. Use external services:

  11. Managed PostgreSQL (RDS, Cloud SQL)
  12. Managed Kafka (MSK, Confluent Cloud)
  13. Managed Redis (ElastiCache, Redis Cloud)

  14. Set up monitoring and backups

  15. Review PostHog's official production deployment guide

Testing Results

Service Health Check:

✅ All containers started successfully
✅ No critical errors in logs
✅ Web service responding on port 8080
✅ Database migrations completed
✅ ClickHouse initialized
✅ Kafka connected
✅ Plugin server running (after encryption key fix)

Known Warnings (Non-Critical):

  • ClickHouse: Async migrations skipped (expected in development)
  • Python: pkg_resources deprecation warning (library-level, not critical)
  • GeoLite2 MMDB file not found (optional feature, not critical)

Rollback Instructions

If you need to revert to the original hardcoded configuration:

  1. Restore the original docker-compose.yml from version control
  2. Remove the .env file
  3. Restart services: docker-compose down && docker-compose up -d

Conclusion

✅ Deployment Successful

All environment variables have been successfully abstracted, and the Docker container deployment has been tested and verified working. The PostHog instance is now running with a clean, maintainable configuration structure.
