🚨 Azure Subscription Quota Issue - Solutions

Problem

Your Azure subscription "it-journey" has zero quota for: - ❌ Basic VMs (B1 tier App Service) - ❌ Free VMs (F1 tier App Service)

This prevents deploying App Service plans in all regions.

Error Message

SubscriptionIsOverQuotaForSku: Operation cannot be completed without additional quota.
Current Limit (Free VMs): 0
Current Usage: 0
Amount required for this deployment (Free VMs): 1

✅ Solutions

Cost: Same as planned ($0 for F1, or $13/month for B1)
Time: 24-48 hours for approval

Steps:

  1. Open Azure Portal: https://portal.azure.com

  2. Navigate to Quotas:

  3. Search for "Quotas" in top search bar
  4. Select "Compute" category
  5. Filter by subscription: "it-journey"

  6. Filter by location: "East US 2" or "West US 2"

  7. Request Increase:

  8. Find "Standard BSv2 Family vCPUs" or "Basic VMs"
  9. Click "Request increase"
  10. Request at least 1 vCPU for Free tier

  11. Request at least 2 vCPUs for Basic tier

  12. Alternative via CLI: 

    # Create support request (requires support plan)
az support tickets create \

  --description "Need quota for F1/B1 App Service in eastus2 for personal project" \
  --severity minimal \

  13. Wait for approval (usually 1-2 business days)

  14. Redeploy: 

    azd up

Option 2: Use Azure Container Instances (ACI) 💡

Cost: ~$8-15/month (pay per hour when running)
Time: Deploy immediately

Azure Container Instances don't require App Service quota!

Implementation:

I can update the Bicep template to use ACI instead of App Service:

Pros: - ✅ No quota restrictions - ✅ Pay only for running time - ✅ Deploy immediately

Cons: - ⚠️ No built-in load balancing - ⚠️ Cold starts (not always-on) - ⚠️ Manual restart if container crashes

Option 3: Use Azure Container Apps 🚀

Cost: ~$20-30/month
Time: Deploy immediately

Container Apps also don't require App Service VM quota (different quota pool).

Implementation:

Revert to original Container Apps configuration:

# Restore original Container Apps setup
git checkout HEAD -- infra/main.bicep infra/main.parameters.json

# Deploy
azd up

Pros: - ✅ No App Service quota issues - ✅ Auto-scaling - ✅ Always-on (no cold starts) - ✅ Built-in monitoring

Cons: - 💰 More expensive ($20-30/month vs $13/month)

Option 4: Use Different Azure Subscription

Cost: Depends on subscription type
Time: Immediate (if you have another subscription)

If you have access to another Azure subscription with quota:

# List all subscriptions
az account list --output table

# Switch to different subscription
az account set --subscription "other-subscription-id"

# Update azd environment
azd env set AZURE_SUBSCRIPTION_ID "other-subscription-id"

# Deploy
azd up

Option 5: Deploy to Non-Azure Platform 🌐

Since the container is ready, you can deploy to:

A. Heroku (Free tier available) 

# Install Heroku CLI
brew tap heroku/brew && brew install heroku

# Login and deploy
heroku login
heroku container:login
heroku create barodybroject

docker tag bamr87/barodybroject:latest registry.heroku.com/barodybroject/web

B. Railway.app ($5/month, 500 hours free trial) - Visit https://railway.app - Connect GitHub repo - Deploy from Dockerfile

C. Render.com (Free tier available) - Visit https://render.com - Create Web Service from Docker Hub - Use bamr87/barodybroject:latest

D. DigitalOcean App Platform ($5/month) - Visit https://www.digitalocean.com/products/app-platform - Deploy from Docker Hub

E. AWS Lightsail Containers ($7/month) 

# Install AWS CLI and deploy to Lightsail

🎯 My Recommendation

Short-term (Today): Deploy to Railway.app or Render.com (free tier) to get app live immediately

Long-term (This Week): Request Azure quota increase and switch back to Azure App Service once approved
