The Gift of the Magi

Each spouse sacrifices their single treasure to buy a gift worthy of the other's single treasure.

The textbook’s favorite Situational Irony irony, and worth studying precisely because it is engineered — O. Henry builds a perfectly symmetric reversal the way a watchmaker builds an escapement. Each expectation causes the other’s reversal; remove either sacrifice and the story is merely sweet.

What keeps it out of the compost is the commentary clause: the outcome doesn’t just thwart the plan, it grades it. The gifts fail as objects and succeed as evidence, and the narrator’s closing judgment — that these two foolish children were the wisest givers — flips the reader’s expectation one final time. A double reversal in under four thousand words. The vault notes, with professional respect, that the ending was reportedly drafted on a deadline.
