Situational Irony

Definition. An outcome that reverses the expectation built into the situation itself — and, in reversing it, comments on it.

Table of Contents

Definition. An outcome that reverses the expectation built into the situation itself — and, in reversing it, comments on it.

Mechanism. No speaker required; the world does the talking. The expectation is embedded in a plan, a design, an institution, or a promise. The reversal lands hardest when it is caused by the expectation: the fireproof theater that burns, the getaway car that won’t start, the company killed by its own invention.

Commonly confused with. Bad luck and coincidence — this is the most composted category in the vault. The test: could you swap in “unfortunately” without losing meaning? If yes, it’s misfortune. Irony requires the outcome to say something about the expectation, not merely disappoint it.
