In the early 1950s, Clair Patterson set out to date the Earth by uranium-lead decay in the Canyon Diablo meteorite. The measurements kept coming back wrong — swamped by lead that was not in the rock. It was on his skin, in the dust, the plumbing, the paint, the air: the exhaust of a civilization that had been burning tetraethyl lead in every gasoline engine since the 1920s. To read the planet’s oldest clock he first had to build geochemistry’s first ultraclean laboratory — acid-washed, positive-pressure, closer to a surgical theater than a rock lab. In 1956 he published the number still in the textbooks: 4.55 billion years.
The contamination turned out to be the second discovery. Patterson recognized that the lead fogging his instruments was new — Midgley’s additive, settled over the entire industrial world — and spent the rest of his career proving it, from ocean columns to polar ice, against an industry science that called the saturation natural. The campaign ended with lead phased out of gasoline and mean blood-lead levels in steep decline. A man who set out to measure how old the Earth is was interrupted by how dirty it had just become, and the interruption became the larger legacy: the obstacle to the measurement was the finding.
