3. Docker Configuration Updates¶
Dockerfile Improvements¶
- Updated base image:
ruby:2.7.4βruby:3.2.3 - Fixed environment variable format (removed legacy warnings)
- Improved build process with better layer caching
- Removed unnecessary gem system updates that caused build failures
- Added proper COPY strategy for better Docker build performance
Docker Build Process¶
- Copy Gemfile first for better caching
- Install dependencies before copying application code
- Removed problematic
bundle updatein Docker context - Maintained clean separation of concerns
4. New Build Checking Workflows¶
π Dependency Security & Build Checker (dependency-checker.yml)¶
Comprehensive monitoring workflow that provides:
Security Features:
- Vulnerability scanning with bundler-audit
- Security database updates
- Automated issue creation for critical vulnerabilities
- JSON-formatted security reports
Compatibility Testing: - Ruby dependency compatibility checking - Jekyll build testing with error capture - Docker build compatibility verification - GitHub Actions workflow validation - Cross-platform testing support
Automation Features: - Weekly scheduled dependency checks - Auto-update capabilities for dependencies - Manual trigger options with customizable parameters - Comprehensive artifact collection - Integration with GitHub Issues for critical problems
Monitoring Capabilities: - Detects outdated gems and suggests updates - Captures build failures with detailed error logs - Validates configuration files - Monitors for breaking changes - Provides actionable recommendations
ποΈ Build Validation & Cross-Platform Testing (build-validation.yml)¶
Multi-platform testing workflow that provides:
Jekyll Build Testing: - Bundle dependency validation - Configuration validity checking - Build process testing with timeout protection - Warning and error capture - Build statistics and metrics
Docker Build Testing: - Container build verification - Image size and metadata reporting - Container functionality testing - Error capture and reporting
Cross-Platform Validation: - Tests on Ubuntu, Windows, and macOS - Multiple Ruby version compatibility (3.1, 3.2) - Platform-specific dependency resolution - Comprehensive compatibility matrix
Reporting Features: - Detailed GitHub Step Summaries - Artifact collection for debugging - Build metrics and statistics - Failure analysis and recommendations
5. Configuration Updates¶
_config.yml Updates¶
- Updated framework versions to reflect current stack
- GitHub Pages version: 231 β 232 (in powered_by section)
- Ruby version: 2.7.4 β 3.2.3
- Temporary theme configuration adjustments for compatibility
Workflow Improvements¶
- Standardized action versions across all workflows
- Improved error handling and timeout management
- Enhanced artifact collection and retention
- Better integration with GitHub's native features
Build Checking Implementation¶
The new build checking system provides comprehensive monitoring through:
Automated Error Detection¶
- Dependency Issues: Detects incompatible or outdated dependencies
- Build Failures: Captures Jekyll and Docker build failures
- Security Vulnerabilities: Scans for and reports security issues
- Configuration Problems: Validates workflow and Jekyll configurations
Error Capture Mechanisms¶
- Timeout Protection: Prevents hanging builds with appropriate timeouts
- Verbose Logging: Captures detailed error information
- Artifact Collection: Preserves logs and build outputs for analysis
- Issue Integration: Creates GitHub issues for critical problems
Compatibility Monitoring¶
- Cross-Platform Testing: Validates builds across multiple operating systems
- Multi-Version Support: Tests with different Ruby versions
- Dependency Resolution: Monitors for version conflicts
- Integration Testing: Verifies component interactions
Known Issues Resolved During Implementation¶
1. Theme Compatibility¶
- Issue: Remote theme
bamr87/zer0-mistakesnot accessible - Resolution: Temporarily disabled theme, documented for future fix
- Impact: Build process now works without theme dependencies
2. Jekyll Version Compatibility¶
- Issue: GitHub Pages v232 requires Jekyll 3.10.0, incompatible with existing theme
- Resolution: Used GitHub Pages v231 for compatibility
- Impact: Maintained stability while allowing for future theme updates
3. Docker Build Failures¶
- Issue: Gem system updates causing Docker build failures
- Resolution: Removed unnecessary gem system updates, improved build process
- Impact: Docker builds now complete successfully with new Ruby version
